Well, it looks like I finally drew a NV elk tag! I am stoked, to say the least! Let the preparations begin!

I'm jealous! what do you have planned? are you gonna pack yourself, drop off or guided? i've been on the table once in early october and loved it! been trying to get back ever since! congratulations!

Definately going to bivy in and hunt the entire season. Not sure where to start as it is a holiday weekend and everyone I've tried to contact for intel seems to be gone.

I will be using a my two piece takedown recurve and takedown arrows again. The combo worked great for me back in 2010 when I hunted the Gila.

The kicker to this is that I also drew a Rubies Muledeer tag and will be hunting that too! Two wilderness hunts back to back. What a year this is turning out to be!

Dang! those are some great hunts to draw on the same year! Best of luck to ya.

Congrats on the great nevada hunts. Ruby's are a blast to hunt deer in. Good luck with the elk tag. I will be hunting my 1st bull in area 073 during archery.

Two areas in Nev called Table mtn;
Both have elk, both are over 10k ft

I had a herd of 200 cows coming in to a watering hole near my backpack deer hunting camp last year on the Table in 161

The unit is 161-164, 171-173. At this point I know very little about the unit. I've just started the process of searching for packers, meat processors, and taxidermists for in the event I kill one.

I will probably start my deer hunt on the 8/13 and hunt till the 23rd, then head to 161 and hunt it until 9/15 if neccessary. I would love to get out for a pre-season scouting trip, but that will be tough to pull off.

I've also started breaking out the bivy gear and looking at what needs upgrading or repair. Two years ago after my Gila Wilderness hunt I went on an Ibex hunt in NM's Florida Mtns and had some critter chew through the shoulder strap of my MR pack! Should have washed the elk blood out a little better, I reckon. I'm not sure I want to chance a bum pack on these hunts.

As far as conditioning goes, I'm currently on a bit of a hiatus from my triathalon training due to three broken ribs, but will be hitting it hard in another week.

Debating on which optics to take, 8-12x42 Lieca's, or a pair of 8x32 Swaro's and a scope.

What do you guys think? Any information is greatly appreciated.

You can certainly hike in and bivy, but you might check into Nick Perchetti with TimberLine Outfitters out of Tonopah. Spending a few bucks to be dropped in (5+miles) with his quality horses is worth the expense especially if you get a bull. If his camp is available, you wont be disappointed to be hunting at 10k feet with every ammenity you need. We filmed bugling bulls (one 320 class 5point) within 60 yards of our wall tents! An ice cold spring with a beer holder isnt bad either. Good luck on the hunt, truly a piece of elk heaven.

More like 12 miles in to the camp I used.

You won't find two nicer guys that know those mtns well- Nick and Pard who own Timberline, I would second the recommendation. Its real big country in there.

Make sure you get the right Timberline though- another one out further east

I have hunted with Nick Perchetti of Timberline outfitters. I agree, you can't go wrong with their help. Nick and Pard are straight up and top notch. Their help would probably be invaluable.
They are reasonable, hard working, honest and know what they are doing.
