Applied for the 4th season in unit 54 with 12 points... Anyone else put in for the Gunnison Units???

2nd season with 1pt...1 in 4 odds .Awesome country,i'd be slobbering at the mouth with 12 pts.

I applied on the south side of the basin - should be a 100% certainty that I draw w/my PP's. I'm not talking until the 5th [day after the application period ends.]

Muzz deer 55 with 5 points, non-resident should have a good chance to draw. Never been there, but will do a ton of research if I draw, and a scouting trip or 2. I am looking forward to seeing new country. Maps and still shots I have seen make it look like a pretty place.

Applied for Unit 55 second season. Non-resident group (4) hunters. Have a cabin in Unit 55 and it makes me sick that I can only buck hunt every 3-4 years or so. Oh well. In 2005 our group (3) hunters then drew tags for Unit 55. Hopefully, the photos successfully attached to the post. -CB-

crestedbutte,
FWIW-- it might ease the pain a little if your group staggered your tags so one of you draws a buck tag each year, and the others can buy a 2nd season OTC bull or draw a cow tag. That way you all hunt and you'll be able to do a little deer "hunting" even if it's not you holding the tag or pulling the trigger every year.

There are 4 of us who hunt a unit that takes 1-2 years to draw, so each year one or two of us has a buck tag and the others hunt elk. It's like having eyes all over the mountain, and it seems like everyone is hunting both elk and deer every year.

GMU 55 Muzzy deer for me. Non resident 5 points. If I don't get drawn I guess I'll be chasing elk with my bow some place else.

I put in for an archery tag in 55. I should be able to draw out with my preference points. I've seen a nice bachelor herd in the same spot for the last 3 years. Always during archery season. Can never find them in rifle season. Some really nice bucks in the group. Hopefully this will be the year.

Here are the pic's. from in front of my cabin at the end of our Unit 55-2005 second season hunt. I am wearing black with white hat. All three of us tagged out. Great time and great memories...that is the most important thing! -CB-

LAST EDITED ON Apr-18-07 AT 03:58PM (MST)[p]sorry but, you have no chance of drawing with 1 pp
need at least 4 pp and more if a NR.

COjack, I agree with you that cmbbulldog won't draw with (1) pref. point but don't necessarily agree with you on the 4 pref. points he'll need in order to draw. Look at the post from April 6 that I started tilted "Gunnison CDOW Meeting Tomorrow." Some other guys included some great graphs showing the recent trends in quotas for unit 54 specifically. 54 has been increasing tag allocations incredibly the last few years and they are increasing the quota in 54 by 40 more tags this year. If I had to guess I would say he might draw with 2-3 pref. points especially if the upward tag allocation trend continues. Just a thought. -CB-

cbutte, you might be right, it will be interesting to see how the increased tags affect the number of applicants for these units. Either way it should be a circus out there.
I am excited to hunt some new country.

I know you needed at least 3 points last year, but they increased tags, and you just never know what people will put in for... like i said, im not expecting to draw it, but you just never know

Is there any good reason why it takes twice as many points to draw 66 as it does 54 or 55 now? I haven't figured that one out, I think there's less tags in 66 but the hunting in 54 and 55 is better I've always heard. I think I'll draw 66 this year but I'm not sure I did the right thing.

For 3rd season 54: Last year there were 298 apps for first choice and 64 tags. With the additional 40 tags, if 43 less people(people with more than 1 PP) apply compared to last year, then people with just one PP will have a chance... Like i said, im not expecting it at all, but with the 4th season, many people apply for that instead of 3rd giving you a chance (although not very good)... thinking next year with 2 points i would have a decent shot though

My thoughts: (1) total number of deer tags is lower in 66; (2) Hunting Fool has overrated (IMO) 54 & 55 for some time now; (3) total number of tags in 54 & 55 have increased quickly the past couple of years (faster than 66 & 67; (4) elk tags are OTC in 54, 55 & 551, but limited in 66 & 67.

It all boils down to hunter density. I went for 67 this year even though the Huntin' Fool "proclaims" 54 and 55 are better trophy units. I'd rather see brown and white than blaze orange in the field.

We had 4 tags in our group last year for unit 54. It was 3rd season and it was fun as heck BUT, Spent some time in 55 and it was showing us much better trophies. Either unit is really a great unit but I think they are giving too many tags for both of these units could get wiped out quickly. 2 of us bought OTC bull elk tags and ended up getting 2 bulls that went 310 inches it was kinda pure luck but of all the bulls we seen get harvested there we had by far the biggest.

There is not a 180" buck behind every bush like thought, that would be the elk hunters, the 180" Bucks are behind every other Bush !

Thats for sure.. Every bush has something behind it but usually its a chubby guy letting go of his box of donuts. 180" bucks will be behind you no matter which direction you are looking..

Gator,

Here is my 551 late deer. He grossed 173". I posted earlier about the trip. My opinion was over-rated with lots of crab claws & big 3x3's. Humped my a$$ way back in there too.

I applied for a point this year and plan on trying 54 or 55 2nd season next time I get enough points. Not bulding 10 points again for a 173". I think a 3/4 point hunt offers the best value for the investment.

Hi Crestedbutte, I applied for 55 2nd rifle. I hunted early rifle in 471 3 years ago and glassed some nice bucks in 55. I have a friend who has hunted 55 archery and muzzle many times for alot of years. Don't know how much this will help. I guess it depends on the weather.

camuleycrazy,
Assuming your a non-res. How many pref. points do you have? PM me, I'd be glad to help you out or give you recommendations for second season areas to look into during your hunt. -CB-

Hey Crestedbutte,
I applied for muzzleloading for unit 55. I went to undergraduate in Gunnison, but don't get up there much anymore. Last year someone on this site was telling me about some huge bucks he saw in 55 up around Crestedbutte. I am a single dad living in Castle Rock, so I doubt I will have much time to scout, but if I draw I would really like to chat with you. I know a lot of guys don't like to give out all of their secrets, but any pointers you might have would be very much appreciated. Take care
Don

I drew a cow again, but I am clear up by Taylor Park Res. By Rifle season, most of the deer have moved down valley towards Gunnison. Where we are we get elk every year. Nice Bucks!!!!

Zim
Hope you get the draw you want next time around, I have heard that area does have a lot of crab-forks, I guess we will find out this week if we draw?

It was brutal. I can't count how many I had to cull through. They were mature bucks no doubt. Even the one I got was very narrow. I saw zero of the nontypical trash bucks I was told lived there.

I have no desire to hunt that 4th season any more. All my scouting time was wasted when snow blocked the areas I'd planned to hunt. Saw plenty of equally sized or greater bucks taken in the 2nd season. I want to be home for November whitetails anyway.

Even after reading all of the posts, I went ahead and put in for 551 / 4th season with 10 ppt's... Based upon past years, I should not have a problem drawing the tag.

I have heard both good and bad, and figured that I would like to find our for myself..

Any helpful information would be very appreciated..

Zim ~ I sent you a pm..

I sure would like to know how your scouting goes and the hunt too, You can PM me if that is possible.

Applied for 4th rifle unit 67 as a NR, with only 2 pts(no chance). This Colo deer hunt is now only 7 years away. As a consolation, drew the 4th rifle for elk. The new defintion of patience in hunting.

Just got home from lake powell, Me and my friend drew!!!!!!! 54 muz!! Time to get the horses in shape, and hit the tredmill and stair stepper a little harder.

buckshot

I drew Unit 54 Nov. 3rd-6th would you be willing to start me in the right direction? I plan on coming several days early to scout.

Many Thanks,

Besrlip

Muzzy 55 for me. That's going to make getting back in shape a lot easier. Took 5 pref. points. Be doing some scouting before season starts.
