My father (72 years old) has drawn a ML Elk tag on the Roadside of the Book Cliffs and I am concerned with his ability to chase elk and would like to get some opinions about if he should turn in his tag rather than attempt the hunt. He has had both hips replaced and has limited mobility. I am not expecting him to go after the biggest bull in the unit but I would like to get him in front of any 6 point bull since realistically this will be his last hunt. Has anyone else had experience on this hunt with limited mobility? Also, are the elk still receptive to calls in late September early October?

Thanks again in advance!

Go hunting even if you have to do it from the vehicle. What harm could there be in spending time with you dad hunting. Just be realistic about how hard he can hunt and have fun. A lot of people will tag out early and would probably even offer you a hand.

LAST EDITED ON May-31-12 AT 06:25PM (MST)[p]Your expectations sound realistic, he has a shot at getting a six point bull from the road. Enjoy the hunt, if you kill it will be a bonus. But I promise you will be glad you kept the tag, for time well spent with your dad.

Congrats, and best of luck to you and your dad

Edit: yes, depending on weather the elk should be receptive to calls.

I'll tell you who it was . . . it was that D@MN Sasquatch!

you shouldnt have any problem killing a bull from the truck, and the elk will be calling, its peak rut you will have a blast.

Wapiti dont turn your tag in keep it and let him have his hunt of a lifetime. i drew the premium books tag this yearso i will be in the area alot and would gladly help in anyway i can

Keep it and hunt, get there a few days early and find some elk that he can make it to and go from there.
I think you will have a great time.

keep the tag. The bulls were very talkative last year on this hunt. They would come right into calls. Dad killed his bull 4 hours into opening day and it was the 5th bull we had called in on the same ridge.

I agree with all the guys above^^^^^^
Keep the tag. Whether he kills or not, you'll have a great time with him. Besides, why would you turn it back? What are you waiting for? He ain't getting any younger! (neither am I)

Good luck to your dad.
I'll be his age in the blink of an eye!

I agree with everyone above. If it is his last hunt definitely go and try to lay the smack down on one. Just the time spent together out there will be priceless.

If you love your dad and don't want to see him have a heart attack with pure adrenaline turn the tag back in... Bugling bulls in late September are never more in the rut than then!

Have a great adventure this year.
I'm next door and will have plenty horses and pack mules so don't hesitate to call for some assistant to pack out that monster!

One of my coolest memory in elk season is calling in a bull right up to the truck!

Keep the tag. The muzzleloader has been the best rut hunt for the last few years. You'll likely have one of the most memorable hunts of your life. Lots of bulls, they're vocal and you'll have a great chance at a respectable bull. Sure the lack of mobility will cut your chances of the biggest bull on the mountain... but at that age and being your father it's far more about the experience and being in the woods.

I can't say thank you enough for everyone's kind words, advice, and encouragement. I spent some time with my father this weekend talking about the hunt and told him all about the posts you guys have shared. After telling him about it I could hear it in his voice and see it in his eyes how excited he is about going on this hunt. It's wonderful because I'm not sure who is more excited about this - me or him! This is by far going to be the best hunt I have ever been on and I am sure the memories will live on for ever. I will post updates throughout the summer and will take lots of pictures during the scouting trips and the hunt. Thanks again everyone!

Good luck to you and your dear Ole Dad!

My dad has been gone for 23 years now and I can only imagine what I'd pay for another hunt with him.

I remember his last hunt with fondness. I took him up AF canyon for a little road hunting. He was too ill with cancer to do anything else.

My son and my brother were there too and we watched him shoot a 2 pt buck with his .222 Rem (his triple-duece). The doctor didn't want him shooting his 270 because of the recoil and recent surgery.

That deer was a gift! The time with dad was priceless!

I drew the same tag and will be out there a lot over the next few months. Feel free to give me a holler if you need anything.

Watch your top knot

It is hard to believe that the summer has passed and my dad's hunt starts in less than 2 weeks. We have spent some time up scouting and have seen some small herds of elk each time with the biggest group having 25+ elk in it. We haven't seen and mature bulls but I have been told that the bigger bulls won't show up until the rut starts.

We have not been on the mountain for 3 weeks now and wondering if anyone has started hearing elk?

With the archery hunt ending today and the rifle opening tomorrow, I am sure most of you are on the mountain or on your way up there. If you had some success this year, please post some pictures.

Thanks again for all the advice and good luck to the rifle hunters.

Last year on my brother's hunt we went scouting and didn't see much. Once we showed up for the hunt though, they were all over. Where are you planning on camping? I have a few spots that are pretty accessable I could point you to if you shoot me a PM.

Man, I sure wish my dad was still around and I had the opportunity to hunt with him on a Book Cliffs muzzy elk tag or just to hunt with him period. Hope you score just for a bonus and PLEASE keep us posted.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-16-12 AT 11:00AM (MST)[p]My wife and I are thinking about this unit for next year. She has 11 points, I have 10. She shoots a .54 Lyman Great Plains round ball. I shoot a TVM .54 flinter. What are the draw odds and is it worth burning the points for this hunt?

Not saying it can't be done, but unless you know the area well and lots of scouting the chances of a 350+ are small.. Most people kill 330 type bulls there.

As he said, average is 300-330. A few big ones are out there, but take lots of time , luck, or a knowledgeable guide to get 350 and bigger.

Hope you guys meet up and get it done for his Dad.

Hope you and your dad find a nice one. They are all winners when your with family!!!
Keep us up dated, can't wait to hear more!

The time has finally arrived. Dad and I are leaving Sunday morning and will be able to get a couple more good days of scouting in before the hunt on Wednesday.

I know the hunt and time with my pops is going to be priceless and I am excited to share it all with you when I return. I will have a great story and hopefully I have some awesome picture to go along with the story once I return back to the real world.

Thanks again to all who have posted on this thread and a special thanks goes out to the others who have helped me out with some great advice on the area. You know who you are!

Take care!

LAST EDITED ON Sep-22-12 AT 11:21AM (MST)[p]The rut has been slow to start out there this year. The weather is supposed to turn a little cooler right before the muzz hunt too. I think it might be a good year for rutting activity for muzz hunters. I hope you guys have a great hunt.

I took this photo out there yesterday morning, this guy had himself a few cows eh?

There is no such thing as a sure thing in trophy mule deer hunting.

When I see that pic I notice 2 things: first, that looks like a good bull, and second, that lead cow is a monster.

Yup!

With todays Management ,You see a Bull with 20 Cows it Sticks out,Sad!

No,I'm not Bustin you in the Chops DAX!

Thanks for the Pic!

Last 2 years the Muzz Boys have had the edge!

Wouldn't it be nice to predict Weather/Rut?

1 bull with 20 cows is because of bad management eh? So you saying the DWR should kill more cows? I will pass that recomendation along to my DWR contacts... ;-)

My cousin just got back from being out there a month or so - slammed a 350+ bull! They are just starting to really talk right now. Good luck.
