Bob's First Bull at 72 years old! - Video

I had the privilege of accompanying Bob when he took his first elk last year. He was 72 years old and had not had a successful elk hunt to this point. After his nephew Joe tagged out, I set out with Bob to find a shooter. That first evening I spent glassing some open country known for feeding lots of bulls. Just as I had anticipated, several bulls began pushing their harems out of the trees just before dark. There was one bull that stood out with a very unique shape to his rack. The bulls frame was kinda narrow, but he had some good tine length and thirds that shot straight out before curling up. The plan was to get there early enough in the morning to catch them on their way back into the trees. Our slow but steady approach in the dark proved just fast enough as we were able to get in front of the last group of elk to leave the meadow. As luck would have it, it was the same bull I had glassed the night before. If you watch closely, you can see blood erupt from the first wound mid body as the second round makes impact in the lower neck. Many thanks to Carl Bryant for capturing it all on film!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-09-12 AT 11:32AM (MST)[p]Congrats to the guy on his first bull, but you say he drew blood "mid body" on the first shot in your post and watching him stand there until he shoots him in the neck makes it appear that the guy flat out missed. Then you say in the video after the fact that "one shot" dropped him like a rock! Normally when you make a statement like that it means the gun was only fired one time---just sayin! May I ask what caliber the guy was shooting? The reason I ask is that if he did hit that big bull "mid body" and then in the neck at only 200 yards, it would seem that he is either flinching from a gun bigger than he should be shooting not being able to put one good one right in the heart/lung areaat that short distance. It makes me wonder if he's missed a lot of others from carrying too much gun, got "buck fever" or has just not hunted much. Please don't take offense as I'm just asking out of curiosity because of the way it went down in the video.

Didn't know the first shot connected until we got up to the bull. Looking back on the video the bull was quartered to us pretty hard when he finally shot the first bullet. It entered behind the lungs. The shock from the second shot sent blood through the first shots entry hole.

That pretty well explains it because the first shot looked like quite a "quartering to" one if the guy was anywhere near the camera. It wouldn't take much on that angle and distance to be off the lungs and back too far like you mentioned. Thanks for the quick response and good luck this coming season!

Great bull!

Don't worry about the arm chair investigators. It seems they can't be satisfied no matter what accomplishment is posted on here.

Congrats on a great bull. I do question the wisdom from the guide taking the second shot with a cow standing directly behind the bulls vitals?? Seems risky with a pass through at 200 yards? Just my observation.

Government doesn't fix anything and has spent trillions proving it!!!
Let's face it...After Monday and Tuesday, even the calender says WTF!
