Cache Meadowville

Hey fellas, last year i got some great advice and help here on MM when i drew a Book Cliffs deer tag. Took a great buck with one heck of a story to go with it. I get around to posting it up one of these days when i figure out how to post the pics with it.
Anyway it took me 10 yrs to get that tags so in normal thinking i wasnt expecting to get so lucky anytime soon. After looking at odds and numbers and picking a hunt that is a little closer to home than the cliffs and with only a point in the hole i drew a LE elk rifle tag for cache meadowville. Im completely shocked. I was totally ready to just start collecting points and wait for my turn. So with that, im looking for advice once again. Im not looking for honey holes or anything like that just some good places to start. I have spent time up new canyon and pole canyon but have never been north of there. I also know that on the north end there is private property.

Anything you have to offer would be appreciated! There will be plenty of scouting trips but just looking for good places to start.

thanks a bunch,
Honkerdwn

try the walk in areas. that would be my 1st place to look

"Any one that says its mostly private is a retard. Did you draw Archery, Muzz or Rifle early or late?"

95% of the public is sagebrush. There is a small, decent section that could/might have elk. The majority of the elk hunting IS on private.

The beat thing you can do is try and find a landowner that will let you pay a trespass fee.

Geeze... Yeah they do. I'm not hear to get some big debate. I have never seen elk in the "sagebrush", in this area. There are roads and traffic- easy access.

woodruffhunter........ thanks for your input. yeah, i do recall alot of sagebrush up there and given the time of year for this hunt (mid sept) im thinking they would still be hanging out up high somewhere. the one good thing im hoping is the rut will be going.

so those that think i should be looking for land owners for a trespass fee.........any names? SJ Ranch? Coldwater?

I believe Kearl Ranch Outfitters (Clint Kearl/Greg Wamsley) take most of the successful Meadowville elk hunters. A 400"+ bull came off their place last year and just yesterday I saw a trail camera picture from their place of a developing bull that looks like it will be at least as good.

I killed a "Big bull" on the Meadowville unit last year during the Early Rifle Hunt....I've already posted photos!...

For the best opportunity to kill a Bull on this unit, I would get in touch with either Clint, Greg or one of the other Landowners in Round Valley...The best elk habitat and hunting on this unit is all private...And thats a fact!...

I don't consider myself a "retard" either!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-12-12 AT 01:05PM (MST)[p]Thanks Jim!...He wasn't quite 400, but real close after the 60 day drying period...393 Gross. Helps to be lucky once in a while!..The story is featured in this months issue of "Eastmans" and also "Trophy Hunter" if you care to read just how lucky I actually was..LOL! BTW, have you got that ram mounted yet?

Honkerdwn...PM me if you would like some more information on this unit. I maybe able to steer you in the right direction.

it absolutely is mostly private, I have the current plat maps to prove it....I have looked at it several times because there have been left over tags. you may get lucky on the public but there is only one small section that might hold elk IMO.

I think these guys are steering you in the right direction of contacting landowners...maybe glass the public stuff right now just to be sure, but also be sure you know what is and isnt private if you do not have permission, not worth the risk.

Kevin, looks like the 1st week of july will be my best chance to get my ram mounted, Jeff cleared his schedule so hopefully we can put him togather, my biggest project will be getting the rock base built.....did ya get my message on your NEV deer tag?

I have one to prove it too! I'll actually post it though!

Excellent antelope hunting on those areas shaded in yellow and blue. Elk hunting? Well, not so much. Your best chance of success is to pay to hunt the private where the best feed, water, and cover is.
