where r some decent public land areas to hunt in colorado for 2nd or 3rd rifle season?

I think you may find it hard to get very many positive responses on a first post asking something like that! Normally you should at least have done some legwork yourself and narrowed your choices down to ask for help, rather than making a post like you have. This has been discussed on here a lot of times and guys will help if you have helped yourself first. Welcome to the site and good luck.

Cut the state in half, take away the LE units and throw a dart at the board. Do your research, talk to some local biologists and put the leather on the ground and hope for some luck. 2nd and 3rd season hunts are tough and very weather dependent as with any hunt. What kind of hunt are you looking for specifically?

Be prepared wherever you go to do what it takes to get away from the orange army. If you find out about it on the net, you can bet you won't have it to yourself on an OTC tag. Narrow it down to a unit based on your research, then find places that are hard to get to because of access/terrain and you are in business. CO elk hunting is more about out smarting the rest of the hunters than it is the elk!

go to the colorado dow site there are unit guides that tell you all about every unit with succes rates amount of public land and animal population.

sorry, going out with some friends that have been out for a few years over in unit 711. the one guy lives in coloradosprings. but neither of them r very computer savy or not much for talkin to people, so i thought i would give this a try

I went on my first elk hunt in Colorado back in October. Hunted GMU12. Plenty of access, plenty of land, and plety of elk. Connected with my first bull, a 5x5 on the 6th day of my hunt. Public land, DIY, saw over 30elk during my hunt, 3 of which were legal bulls. One on private land, and the other two were together in an aspen grove, one of which I harvested. Only problem is lots of othher hunters. Do yourself a favor and get good boots. Gonna do a lot of hiking to find the bulls... Good luck!
