Colorado Deer?

I know that the Colorado application date has came and gone, but there should be left over deer tags. Which unit that usually have L.O.T. available would be a good place for me and my 2 boys (12-14yrs.) to have a good chance to harvest their first buck? No honey holes, just some oppinions! I'm new to Colorado, (just moved to Craig a while ago), so I thought this forum would be a good place to ask around.
Thanks for any help!

liv4hunt, Excellent country. I'd love to afford to live there. Not hunting unit #4 this year cause I think my 12 PP will get me a good tag but I'll get ahold of you and let you know where we've filled about 60 of our last 62 elk tags in your neck of the woods before next application season.

Friends hunted 4 last year, directly above you & all harvested animals, said it was busy with people & had some concerns with private property, but all saw & shot decent 3/4 point bucks.

Califelkslayer,
I took a drive around unit 4 today, could just barely get into national forest. Beutiful Country for sure!! Seen lots of deer, but only a few elk. The elk are pretty much back up on top. Nice ride, me and the wife and kids had a great time!!

Liv4hunt, I posted on one of these before on a guy looking for Unit #4 info about all of the deer I saw just driving around North of town. In "01" a couple of days before first elk, a buddy and I drove and glassed on gravel county roads just north of you and saw 600+ deer in a couple of hours. 4 nice ones including a non-typical. All on private I think. It seemed there were small parcels of land that were owned by different landowners. 4/441 was where we were. I know the deer herd has taken off since then so it should be even better. You're right there so if I were you, I'd knock on some doors and maybe get permission. Even if it was only for your sons.

Also I think I remember someone telling you about the sporting goods store in town. I concur with that advice. Can't remember the name but i could find it. Couple of older gentlemen in there really seemed to know what they were talking about. I'm sure you'll have that area dialed in a year or two. GOOD LUCK and maybe I'll look you up next time I'm in town.

Sounds good to me!! I'm taking everyones advice and figureing out how to make it work. I'm truely looking forward to this fall!! Look me up if and when you ever get this way!!
