Commercial elk scents for archery hunts

Anyone try them? I will be hunting in nasty, swirling winds along mountain ridges and canyons so am concerned about my scent.

Years ago I used to use a bit of earth scent or "cow in heat" cover ups. The urine left me with the rich scent of elk all the time I was hunting, so it was a bit motivating. lol I don't use any now. If they can smell the coverup, unless it is so thick that nothing else could be smelled, they'll still pick up the underlying odors. As far as the benefit of the scents as attractants... IDK. Attractants are the norm in trapping, but there is a concerted effort to not leave any scent at the set.

LAST EDITED ON Jun-30-12 AT 08:11PM (MST)[p]I've tried them in the past, and the bottom line is, no matter what you are using, if they get your wind it is game over.

Usually we hunt the mornings and evenings because of the thermals helping to move the breeze in a more positive direction. Oftentimes in mid-day, we will wait somewhere across a canyon from where the elk are bedded, and try to use the wind to ambush in the late afternoon when they start moving again. I think a lot of the reason they do not move much in the middle of the day is because of unpredictable wind, they like to move into a steady breeze most of the time.

We've killed a few bulls in bad swirling winds, but I cannot credit that to any type of scent products, it was just luck and timing.

The other thing I hate about using commercial scents, it makes it impossible to smell anything except yourself. I have detected elk many times by smell before I have seen them.

Best of Luck,
Jeff

I like Moccasin Joes its an oil and lasts along time. I use Pine and Sage scent and have taken elk at 20 yards without being busted. I put my como in a plastic bag with the scent a week before the hunt. They have any scent you want Elk,Deer. I will see if I can send a link for you. If not they are on the web.http://moccasinjoedist.com/

I think you would do better with cover scent than attractant, try Final Step cover scents, they work awesome and have a few different scents depending on the type of habitat you will be in. I have friends that have been down wind of critters and not been detected.Check out their website and give them a try. I bought some and just waiting for he chance to try it out!!!!!!

I swear by it. I hunted the wasatch last year and the winds were terrible. Once you dropped off the tops you didnt know how it was going to blow from one day to the next.
We had some extremly close incounters with alot of elk and with the help of some good scent killer product and cow in heat cover scent we were able to get right in the middle of them.
I wont go with out it!!!
