I should be able to draw a KS mule deer tag this year. Does any one have any thoughts or recommendations as to were to hunt? Any good areas with just a trespass type fee? Maybe outfitters?
Thanks

I might be talking outta my butt about this. I Haven't hunted Kansas for der, but you might be able to get some good tips/advice by writting Guy Eastman at the Eastman's journal. If I recall correctly, he killed a monster muley in KAnsas on the video "Hard Time Bucks". If I'm wrong about that, eastmans would be a pretty good place to start at least. Good luck this season.

Yes he did & i'm not sure who he hunted with. Non-resident mule deer hunting is muzzle loader only, no rifle permits are available for non-residents. I've got 3 pp's myself & would love to use them for a muley hunt as well.

Brad,
That buck that Guy Eastman shot is a real stud. I saw it in a taxidermy shop in Cody a couple of years ago. The taxidermist full body mounted that one and another he had killed in Wy in the same year. Good luck in Kansas!

LAST EDITED ON Apr-28-07 AT 07:31PM (MST)[p]I know about the one Guy killed, I think it was with Cedar Bluff. I have a buddy that lives in Silina KS, and he knows the people at Cedar Bluff they had the deer patterned very well and a bunch of trail camera pictures of it. Guy paid $10,000 to shoot it. Cedar Bluff is $5000+ and I am hoping to find something I can afford. I do have a few possables in the works, but I thought I would keep doing research and see what you guys could help me with. Thanks for theh help and keep it coming and I will look into your ideas.

I hunted Kansas mule deer back in 01,02,&03 with a muzzleloader. I drew the 1st year and purchased a landowner tag 2nd and 3rd hunt. I hunted the early season (around sept 15th). It is a very tough hunt as far as seeing deer. All the crops are still up and temperatures could be as high as 90 degrees. Your window of oppurtunity is generally 1/2 hour at daybreak and 1/2 hour at dusk. doesn't give you much time to get it done. I hunted unit 1 and unit 2. Both are good as well as unit 3. I definitley noticed the quality go down hill in the 3 years I was there. 01 was awesome, 02 was okay, 03 was terrible. There are some big bucks still living there but unless you live there you would need inside info to find out where they are. Also don't waste your time with walk in areas you need to hunt private ground. Get permission early or use an outfitter. There are not too many in unit 1 or 2.

Personally If I went back ,I would either try the late season (December, with a scope)or skip the muleys and go after a big whitail.

I don't think I'll be going hunting with Guy Eastman anytime soon, if I have to shell out $10k. Thats nuts. It must be nice to be rich AND hunt for a living.

Bogey I hunt western Ks. for muleys every year for the past 7-8 years (archery about 4 weeks every year) and can tell you that the quality has gone down but there are still some good bucks out there, and a very few great ones. If you want some info contact me via email at [email protected] You might also contact Matt Palmquist here on MM. I believe he may have some good info too. I dont know him but he took a dandy buck last year. BTW I'm not a guide or outfitter.

hmmm, I could have sworn that I read in one of the Eastmans that Guy didn't know anything about that deer before he showed up at the farm it was killed on. Seem to remember it was in one of the Comment and Responce sections of one of the mags after all the pictures came out. Mater of fact that C&R section was the #1 reason I quit getting their "magazine".

I'll have to see if I can dig it up. I think I tossed it though.

Many years ago (late 70s) I was a resident of Goodland Kansas and hunted one late December season and killed a 31 inch Muley. It is still my best buck and I have hunted the West all my life. But early in the year the deer hide in the corn fields and river bottoms and it's almost impossible to find them. I agree that the late hunt is key if you want to kill a good buck. Back then most farmers would let you hunt their ground if you just asked, but I don't know what it is like now. Good luck!

Yes, that is correct, Guy was shown the pictures when he got there and was told eh could shoot it for 10g and he called his dad and got the ok. I really don't care if he did, if he can afford it the more power to him. It was not in a high fence and the deer could have ended up miles away when he tried to get close for the shot.
That is what I was told by my buddy from KS when he was showing me the trail camera pictures of the buck. I am not ripping on Guy and don't want it to seem like i am.

I don't care if you are ripping on him... ;)

What I can't figure is how you book a hunt and don't know a thing about a friggn monster buck living on the ranch you intend to hunt until the day you show up.

If I recall right he planned on hunting whitetails and changed his mind after seeing this deer (who would'nt). Anyway it makes for a better story if he doesnt know about the deer before arriving to the lodge.

They kill some great animals every year but don't forget they have a product to sell. Hmmm...10k or 5k is nothing to maintain your TV show and magazine. I would do the same thing if I was in their shoes. Not bashing but let's get real or at least somewhat grounded on the reality of todays marketed hunting.

"Hard time bucks?" HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!
As in "I had a hard time talking my dad into the $$$

I would have done the same thing, but I would have called the video "I am lucky to have the cash to hunt these bucks"

Again, I would have done the same thing. Can't blame guy one bit.
