Drew a Fillmore Oak Creek Any Weapon Deer Tag. I've never hunted in this area before. If anybody is willing to share any info. It would be appreciated. Thanks for any Info.

LAST EDITED ON May-01-07 AT 08:50AM (MST)[p]I've hunted this unit quite a bit for elk. It is a very difficult hunt. There are some nice bucks, but you will have to work hard for them. This unit has a low number of deer compared to other units. It's a relatively small unit, so get out and scout. My uncle and cousin both drew tags last year. They hunted the entire season and did not find what they were looking for. How many points did you have?

I also drew this tag, but for the Muzzleloader. There are good bucks just like the rest of the LE units you just have to find them. I know the area pretty well. I got the chance to hunt on this unit with a friend who drew in 2005. He ended up taking a 170 class buck that year, but this buck was not the biggest buck we saw.

I drew the unit for archery elk, will be down there as much as possible scouting, for those who have drew tags in the years passed any good starting points for elk would be greatly appreciated, also is there elk on the gilsons? thanks

There used to be elk on the Gilson's...until the DWR opened it up a few years ago and killed them all off. They realized they made a huge mistake and brought the Gilson's back into the LE unit. There are a few elk still there, but good luck trying to run one down with a bow. Some of the Gilson's is also private. Most of the elk hang out in the private area. Some have had luck down around Cove Fort. And there are quite a few elk down around the Church Hills.

Not trying to disway anyone from putting in for this unit but having hunted it most of my life, I think the average person will come away disappointed. Yes, there are a few big bucks in this unit, but the deer densities are low and the biggest bucks live in the steepest, nastiest, ledgy country they can find.If you have to look over 10-20 bucks a day this is not your hunt. You will not have any sucess road hunting, I can assure you of that. In contrast, if you are in top physical condition, have top end glass and you know how to use it, lots of patience, and a you're a good shot at long distances you may kill a big buck. For all the reason listed above, this is one of my favorite places to hunt. Good luck to everyone who drew a tag. You'll need it.

Best, Mike

Check out Horneebiggame.com. They know the Oak Creek Unit just about as good as anyone out there. Guides for both elk and deer. They took an awesome non-typical last season. Also, their prices are actually lower than what they show on the web-site. Check their web-site, their photo gallery have some huges bucks in it!!

Mike thanks for the PM you sent it will help me out. I will probably be calling you at the number you gave in a few weeks. Thanks again for the info.

I know a few people who have either hunted or gone with somebody who was hunting this area, it seems everybody says the same things you have said. I'm sure its going to be tough hunting but that is what seems to make it a little more interesting and fun. I had nine points, some people will think I was crazy to give up that many points for this tag, but I think it will be worth the experience.

I drew this unit in 2001. That year there were 62 tags and 7 were NR. Very few roads, access is all by foot and the country is very steep and rugged. I had limited time and didnt know the unit hired Dry Creek Hunts - Brice Pilling. One heck of a great outfit. We hunted hard and saw several bucks each day. The genetics here seem to produce tall heavy dark racks. Spend alot of time hiking the steep canyons and glass. I ended up with a nice 30" buck but that is not the norm for this unit. All the bucks i saw were tall and heavy most 24-26 inches. Brice lives there and has hunted that unit his whole life, hunts lions in the off season so he knows the mountain well. He would be my first call if i drew this tag again. Good luck.

Thanks for the info., it all seems to be telling me it could be a hard hunt. It should be a great time. I've always hunted hard no reason to change now. Thanks for the heads up on the outfitter, if my scouting doesn't pay off I will have to give it some seriuos cosideration. Thanks again!!!

Gunther,

Sent you a PM.
