Check out this auction.. this guy is selling 3 WORLD CLASS bucks right now with several from the past. FEW of them appear to be caped?!?!?!? What is up with that?

So my question is, is this normal? How many racks do you guys see of this caliper cut off the head without being caped?!?!?

I did that with a moster bull elk one time. I did not care to have him mounted, and did not want the hide and did not want to carry out the extra weight, so I just sawed it off. There are LOTS of guys who done care about a mount, most of my buddies from the Rez done care about the mount, they shoot what they want, take the meat and pile the hornes together. . .

Also, it could be very old and back in the day, you saw a lot of anterls like that.

Looks pretty old to me. I've seen probaby a 100 that size and bigger with the hide still on them. Diffrent times, diffrent strokes.

I'll say this much, at 800+ on that auction, I just found the motivation to finally go clean out grandpa's shed, if you know what I mean.

My grandpa killed a 38" 8x11 and just hacked the antlers off. Then years later ended up throwing them away because they took up too much room in the garage. Some people just don't realize what they have, others don't care. To each their own.

Yup, that's what i would say as well, they look pretty old too me.
I have a 205 typical set that my grandpa killed back in the 60's. Back then big bucks weren't really that big of deal and a lot of guys just cut them off and tossed them in the attic. But....i have it now and it's on a cape and on my wall:)

it'll cost you more then $800 to wait out a draw these days..gee's what a nut case

Poached more than likely. Think about it, You dont have to show anyone your tag if you dont cape it.

Naw they are just old, money says it came out of grandpa's garage, but whos to say that gramps didnt do a little headlight hunting.

Antler size is just not important to some people. Heck here in BC big racks are hacked off and thrown out in the woodshed all the time. Just look at that 270+ net buck killed in BC last fall. It's on the B&C's Trophy Watch page. Yes, those are saw marks you see. :)

Maybe a winterkill pickedup head? It looks like one of the tines might have been chewed on at the tip on the right side. Cedar

Keeping and displaying the horns is a way of showing honor to the animal and its' life. I've got a bunch that I didn't shoulder mount, but Dad has put nearly all of them on a nice board and covered the skull plate with leather. Those are a lot of great memories.

Looks like the skull cap is broken to me. They say it is bondoed for strength. Doesn't really matter though. It does look old so probably not poached.

Lots of western states are having problems with guys poaching deer on the winter range and putting the heads up in trees. They then come back in the spring and call it a pick up. It doesn't take long for a rack to look weathered sitting in a tree. I am not saying this guy did that but I'd be leary about racks like this being sold on ebay.
