I was lucky enough to draw this tag this year for the rifle hunt. I will have the chance to get up there a couple of times to scout it out but I was hoping to get a little direction on where to concentrate my efforts. I am somewhat familiar with the area around Browns Park but if anyone else has some other areas that I should look I would sure welcome the help.

Thanks in advance!

Congratulations on your draw. I hunted Diamond Mt. in 1999 and took a nice 4pt. There is alot of private land. Stop by the BLM office and DWR office to get maps of the private/public land areas. I took my buck west of Matt Warner Res.

Like Mark said there is a lot of private but it is somewhat suprising how much of the public land offers good hunting. The hills north of Calder Res seem to hold deer as does West Creek at the far north end of Jackson Draw. On my last scouting trip out there two years ago I saw a 180+ buck and several in the 165-170 range.

Good luck - don't forget your fishing pole when you go out scouting. All of the lakes have fish and of course the Green River is a pretty short drive away.

Thanks guys! I figured I would take the fly rod and float the green for a ways since the North side is the boundry of the unit. I will be sure to get the maps. Thanks for a heads up on some places to look though. I will be able to maximize my time a little better now.

LAST EDITED ON May-16-07 AT 04:34PM (MST)[p]Where are the locals when you need em?

I'm not expert on Diamond Mtn, but was just west of there last fall chasin' elk with my boy who drew a youth tag.

Looking at the land ownership of that unit shows that all most of the entire "top" of the mountain (80-85%) is private land. If it were me, I'd focus on the south slope on all that BLM land. Between Jones Hole Road and Island park Road.

I've got a scan (PDF) with the land ownership in that unit. PM me and provide and e-mail addy, and I'll send it to you. If you want the topo maps, you can get free .GIF files here:

You kind of need three resources (the unit boundry info, land ownership info, and good topo maps) to figure out where you can hunt within the LE unit and on public land.

Muskegman,
I just checked out that map site and it is awesome! Are there sites like this to other state geology maps?

All the locals hunt the private land! Your best bet for a good buck on Diamond is around the Jackson Draw area as has previously been said. Also, there is a lot of public land on the backside of the river across from Little Hole, it is hard to get to, you'll have to hike but that may be better anyway.

I hunted it last year and had a good time. All the scouting I did in the summer was not very productive since it was so hot and dry. We found deer everywhere. One bit of advice, the bigger deer come out as the season progresses.
