Hey guys Ive drawn an any weapon tag and have been putting some boot leather down around griffin top. As you know this is a large unit and i want to scout another area but have really nothing solid to go to. Is it antimony creek or ridge i always hear about? What about boulder top or oak creek area? Also hear alot of outfitters use the area around barkers reservoir i dont want to crowd any one so should i stay away or take a look over there? Also i know they take some huge bulls off there every year but what would you guess the avgerage bull is? Thanks

You're lookin in the right Places! The bulls will show up. Good luck, I saw some smokers up in those areas last year.

It's a tough unit to figure out which equals tough work, hence the reason folks being tight lipped. I've sacrificed many, MANY weekends/summers over the years to figure this bad boy out on my own, I advise you to do the same! It will make it a whole lot more meaningful and rewarding to do it on your own. But with having said that, all the places you listed will get pressure, some years a lot, some years a little less, but there will be pressure. It's basically an area everyone knows either by default or it just being a popular area. The boulder top IMO is the best place to start if you don't know the area and want to find some good country. Stick to the north end and you"ll be fine. There's always a pig that comes off the top or east side. I beieve that's more than enough info to get you started. Good luck!

You want more "opportunity"? Start shooting a bow and apply for out of state tags as well, IT'S THAT SIMPLE!

I had the late season tag mabey 7-8 years ago. Its fairly thick country esp where the good bulls where hanging later in the season in the area I hunted (had warm weather, no snow the year I went). Family member is getting close to points needed to draw the late season so I too will be fairly tight with info. Its a fun hunt, wish I had the points to draw again soon but looking forward to going back in the near future tagging along with him.

Thanks guys. I been spending alot of time getting to know the area but 26 tags with everyone having 5 spotters im sure adds alot pressure in popular spots, time to find the holes they hide in. Thanks again

26 tags is very few for how big that mountain is. If you get off the roads you probably won't see another hunter!

good luck, post some pics when your done

How to start an argument online:
1. Express an opinion
2. Wait

Don't forget the antlerless and spike only hunters. Oh ya, and the stupid deer hunters. There will be thousands of people all over that mountain. But it is a big area, so you should be able to find an isolated spot to hunt.

no, not during the any weapon season.......just before it with trucks and four wheelers (archery season). The hardest part of pre-season scouting is having bow hunters messing around and chasing the bulls to another canyon.

Problem with the archery hunt- you have all the gun hunters scouting and chasing all the big bulls around. Let them hunt!!

Thanks guys. I will have to work on a out of state project so cannt harrass the bulls during archery season even if i wanted too. I am heading down this weekend to look around boulder top and do some fishing for brookies nice thing about that side. Any more tips? This is going to be a great year cannt wait to see the pictures of the archery bulls coming out of there. If you wait until the last day to tag out on archery season ill be happy to help pack that stinky sucker out of your honey hole:)

Just wanted to leave an update incase some one searches this later. Ran ten cameras up there this year and got plenty of pictures of good bulls but not one great bull. I learned alot of new country and met many people around there that gave out info. Got to see what all the hype was about on the far west end of griffen top and enjoyed being completely alone on the boulder top. Bulls didnt bugle offen or every long and man was it warm after the sun came up. Ended up seeing a great bull wallowing put the sneak on him but it ended up not working out. Great hunt but dont know if it was worth burning 18 points on. If you draw this know where the bull rut at or pray they bugle and help you out alittle i should have went to church more before the opener. Thanks to all that offered advice maybe in another twenty years i can draw a tag again:)

Sam,
For what it is worth, it was a tough year for most LE rifle hunters. The hot weather and limited rutting activity kind of messed with everybody. Obviously some had some great success, but many did not. I have a friend that bought an auction tag for 9 K and ate tag soup. It sounds like you were real close at the end, but sometimes it just doesn't work out! Sorry.

LAST EDITED ON Oct-01-12 AT 09:23PM (MST)[p]Thanks for the update. I was following your hunt because I have 16 res points and I could easily have the muzzy tag next year if I want. Some have told me the muzzy hunt can be better than the any weapon but everyone says if they aren't talking it is very tough no matter what hunt. Sounds like you had fun and that's what really matters

Bingo some years the muzzy hunt is the way to go! rifle hunt is to warm and the bulls are quiet. been down there for 2 1/2 weeks seen a lot of bulls but only 3-4 that were good!
