Plains mule deer hunt

I need some insight into archery hunting the eastern plains of Colorado the first week of October. The plus I see is that the bucks will still be grouped together. Also the deer haven't been spooked as much.

Please feel free to let me know when you have been most successful and if you have hunted the first weeks of oct and what to expect. Good or bad.

A lot of the land is Private and or tied up with outfitters with a small portion of public access areas that get hammered. there are some monster Mu lies but also some Monster whitetails. Spot and Stalk is the main way to hunt, but if you can find a spot to set up a tree stand along the river bottoms it is a great way for whitetails. Get out and start knocking on doors Earlie, I found that access was hard to come by as outfitters have a lot of the land tied up.
The deer are not too spooked but it is a lot like antelope hunting... wide open spaces after the crop harvest and the deer can spot you along way off. they are use to vehicles but a person on foot scares them.

thanks for the info, have you hunted before the crops are cut and when do they cut the crops? I was looking to hunt early October, what times do you think are the best?

LAST EDITED ON Jun-08-07 AT 06:30PM (MST)[p]I hunted it in Sept 1999, most of the crops were harvested by then.
I did see a few parts of fields left standing, probably for the Goose hunt or maybe left for the animals.

As for what time would be the best I would say during the rut in November... as the bucks will be out cruising for does and be more visable. being farm land and that it is mostly reserved for outfitters they are not pressured alot...so just about anytime is good, Oct is just as good as anyother season, The closer to Kansas you are the more Whitetails you will see, but I saw some huge mulies in unit 103.

UNIT
98,101-103,109,116,117, 121,122,126,127

TERRAIN
easy/moderate

ACCESS
mostly private, limited access, HUGE bucks

Hunt the bluff area's for Muley's and riverbottom for Whitetail's. If you can spend a few morning's in the local cafe having coffee with the local guys(farmers) you just might get a place to hunt, Any CRP land that you can find to hunt is a great place for both and it esaier to hunt with a bow, keep the wind in your face and good luck.

thanks guys

Gator have you hunted the Chalk bluffs area? If you have do you know any public land to hunt? I am looking to the west side of Hereford and to the east side of Rockport. I found the Chalk Bluffs natural area on the state parks website but I am trying to find out if you can hunt it.

Thanks again I think I may try to hit it right after the rifle season. Nov 7 throught the 14 th.
