Bugles???

I was down on a utah limited entry unit doing some scouting last week (Aug. 9th-11th) and seen over 300 head of elk, some nice opening day shooters. The only elk I heard talking were in large herds (around 100 or so).

There was a large herd that moved by my dad and I, from their feeding grounds to their bedding grounds at around 8:00 am. We heard them comming and got into position to watch the train come through. It was a sight I'll never forget! Elk after elk kept filtering through the trees, the majority were mewing, chirping and yes, bugling. Only one 5 point in the herd was hard horned. Tons of spikes, cows and rag horns. There was a monster in there that we did not see but could tell he was big by the sound of his bugle. He was actually down in the bedding area and was calling to the herd as they came through. They talked for a good 45 minutes and once in their bedding area, they went silent. I have never herd them talk like that this early, especially in velvet! It was for sure a treat I'll never forget.

I was scouting a month ago in CO and heard probably close to 30 bugles. Saw a herd of 100 or so with several raghorns acting like they were king of the mountain.

Bloodtracker---- when the "train " came through, Were they is single file or were they coming through in a wide group?

Guess I just trying to figure if they all use the same trail or filter through and is that the way they usually travel?

This group was following the general trail but with so many elk (the majority of them feeding as they moved) they were about 15 to 20 yards wide as they passed by. Not alot of single file activity in that large of a group. Smaller groups will usually file through one behind another. But then again, it all depends on how important their destination is to them. If they are being pushed, they will most likely be single file, following the lead cow. If they are meandering to their bedding grounds or comming out of their bedding grounds to feed, they usually come out in a group, side by side.

I heard a bugle at 9:30 last night near my spike camp. I got him to answer back twice. He was at a wallow.

We had a couple of bulls that would half heartedly respond to bugles saturday morning, but they did not sound off at all saturday night. I did see a couple of bulls with cows as well.

This morning, I saw a 300 class six point chasing cow off the side of the road in Spanish Fork canyon. Seems like the rut is touching a few of them a little early this year....

They are bugling pretty good down on the Pahvant, mostly younger bulls. There was a 5 point trying to rut about 20 cows on the opener. I thought that was a little wierd.
