More Ut. Cow Tags Sept. 6th

hmmm.....
I guess they know what they're doing. It sure seemed like they were already giving out a ton of tags (more than last year for sure) but with these additional tag it feels outrageous to me.

Thanks for the info Robb
Zeke

I agree Zeke Outrageous! How do they figure?? The herd is already dowm enough.. BS in my mind, they must need the $$

Less deer tags, had to make up budget some place! "plants impacted by drought" give me a break. Elk are tough, UDWR is soft!

1430 total new cow tags if I am reading it correctly.

I do not see many of those listed on the leftover cow tags list so one would think that they could have just issued tags from those units to guys/gals/youth that didn't draw in the actual cow draw...???

Robb

I've never seen anything like it Robb so I don't know how they will/have issued them. Maybe an emergency drawing for the emergency tags.

I guess the new motto is "save a plant, kill a cow".

Like I said before, I hope they know what they're doing up at the DWR. They've errored before and I pray this isn't one of those times. I've seen it happen where the more tags issued equals way less success. Maybe they're banking on this premise.

grumble, grumble

Do you suppose they will reduce the number of grazing permits in an equal fashion to help save the range?

I think the F&G would if they could but they are not the ones who can make that call.

This weekend I looked at the driest country I can ever recall seeing in Utah.
Do you suppose they are hoping to let us harvest a few extra elk rather than have them starve each other to death?

Let the back-seat driving/arm-chair quarterbacking begin!

I would agree on starvation of deer potential with habitat loss to drought, but elk are VERY hearty animals. They have weathered dry and cold/wet before, they will find the feed they need. I personally would like to know exactly what plants are so impacted that warrant another 1400+ tags in some of the already highest tag concentrated units. I have in the past and will hunt the Chalk Creek private lands for a cow again this year. I know the East Canyon units very well, what plants in those units are so impacted as to raise tag limits that much higher?

I will be picking up a second cow tag and making soup with it. I already have one cow tag for the freezer filler, that is plenty.

Good observation LBH.
Like I said "I hope they know what they're doing".

I suppose the F&G has a pretty good idea of what it takes to protect the herd as a whole but they have made some faux pas in the past.

We've all been screaming about the deer herds and it might be an attempt to reduce competition during a stressful time of the year.

I was down on the la sal mountains for the opener and it was the driest I've ever seen. We checked four big water holes and they had all been dry all year. the elk herd is going to be in big trouble if we don't get some water soon. I'm not sure about the impact of the extra tags ,but it might be needed.

Yes Zeke,
My observation comes from regularly hunting with my son, who was part of a nationally honored plant identification team at USU. He pretty much knows every plant on the mountain, and regularly points out their health status. Right now, as Andyman implied, our range is in terrible shape. But it is always upsetting to me that "hunters" rarely, if ever, give the DWR credit for making a smart move.
Mother nature throws us a curve-ball, and you can GUARANTEE we "hunters" will blame the brown hats for declining elk and deer numbers!

I just looked at these units and their season success rates and I came up with that these units, without the extra tags, will harvest about 1100 animals. Then with the extra tags it is about 400 more animals. That is just looking at last years rates so realistically it could be more or less.
I think the allocation of extra tags should benefit the elk and deer in the long term. I spend a good amount of time each summer doing habitat surveys on the winter range and this year the range looks pretty bleak. Lucky last year we had substantial growth from the extra water to create some extra good feed. However this year the leader growth on a lot of the sage, bitter brush, mountain mahogany, service berry are all rather short. Even the grasses are not as tall this year. These extra tags will just ease the pressure a little on the range in a already tough year. We cant overload these stressed out ranges. Plus you cant maintain a health elk herd if you don't consistently have feed for them each winter year.

FISHLAKE. Enough said. I don't hunt it, but I know what happens with the DWR and there wisdom with cow tags. I used to go to ST. Anthonys sand dunes in Idaho(yes it is a desert). It is closed all winter and into the spring because it is the winter range for the Teton elk. The point is, I think the elk will be fine. One dry summer does not dictate a trend, last year there was still snow on the mtn.. We always seem to go dramatic, "they will starve to death", I doubt it. The deer in the area, I will hear that argument, but the elk will be fine. If there is an emergency, lets kill the cows in July and August, before they are pregnant and before the bulls wasted all there energy( and in some cases lives) for nothing.

When they came for the road hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the oppurtunists I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for the public land hunters I was not one so I said nothing. When they came for me there was no one left to say anything!

for every cow elk tag. one winter grazzing permit should be pulled,,,,,if thier is no feed??

If I'm reading it right, these permits are just going to be
sold over the counter at the DWR and 300 other licensing
agencies. On sale, Sept 6th ,, 8:00am.................WOW!

What are they paying these so called" Wildlife Biologists" for?

Piss poor game management in my opinion!...all about the $$$...

Incompetence! or politics!....either way!...Very Sad!

They are issuing these cow tags to help the wintering deer. The deer in the Basin are in fas worse shape then the elk. So decreasing a healthy population of elk to help a struggling deer herd only makes sense.

utaharcher77, lets kill all the elk so we have nothing to hunt, your deer are done get over it, all the money is not going to bring them back , but we do have a good elk heard if you will stop kill all the cows,,,
