I just found out that im hunting deer in 10 with my muzzy! I know that its a hard area to hunt but I dont mind hikeing. I watched an eastons bowhunters journal over the winter and they were hunting in the rubys and they packed miles back in. Does anyone have any idea where they were or where they could have been? Also does anyone know of an outfitter that does a drop camp? Thanks for the help!!!!

You drew my tag! I thought I was going to draw this year. My wife is due end of Sept. anyways so it is probably a blessing I didn't draw. How many points did you have? I haven't hunted the unit, but have heard good things. I know it gets a lot of pressure during the rifle hunt, but I think the muzz hunt is a great choice, decent weather, fewer people, and longer shooting range than an archery hunter. I think Wes, that posts on here guides in that unit, you might try sending him a message to see about the drop camp thing. Good luck to you. Let us know how it goes.

Sorry I stold you tag! I hunted there last year with my family and we did see some nice deer but I would like to do a back country hunt where I have a shot at a monster. Has anyone ever backpacked in from lamoile? If so where did you go and how was the heard?

I've spent a few days chasing muleys all over the Ruby's. Give me call and I'll help you out.

I drew a tag for 10 also for archery and I'm in the same boat as you nv_hunter. But from what I understand there is deer all over that unit, the trick is to get as high as you can. It would be good to know where they filmed that hunt??

A drop camp would be awesome and if anyone knows who does such a thing I would be interested as well.

I did talk to Walt today and he seems like a really nice guy. I think I am going to use his services to pack me into the rubys. Has anyone hunted the overland lake area?

We hunted the Overland Lake area extensively last year on the early bowhunt. Let me know if you have any questions. Could you pm me walt gardner's phone number?

Congrats. That's a great hunt. For an outfitter w/ a drop camp try Hidden Lake Outfitters. I know they will pack you in and out. I spoke to the guy last year backpacking in. He said he would pack out our deer if we needed the help. There # is 775-779-2268. Tough hunt, lots of vertical, but the range isn't very wide and there are lots of deer. Good luck.

Overland is hunted hard, but good deer numbers. Not a hard walk up there if your in shape. There is other places that I would rather have someone take me into. Later

$600 for a drop camp by hidden lake outfitters, 2 guy minimum. That puts that out of my price range, just a working stiff, and I always hunt alone, not by choice. I would suspect that Green Mtn to the south is hit hard as well since you can walk in from Harrison Pass quite easily. Has anyone hunted up by Verdi lake or Robinson lake or between the two?

Hard to say where Eastman's could have been, the Rubies and East Humboldts are bigger than a lot of people believe, and there are a lot trails 5+ miles long, with the Ruby Crest trail being 50.

Last I heard is that around Robinson the deer numbers are not great for some reason. I may be looking at hunting that this year, and will definately scout it some. Dad and I both drew (ML), and will be packing in for 7 days or so.

I put a pack trip together for opening week. If you want to get in on it, he will pack you in for 500 and thats with the pack out of a deer!!
