Hey guys anyone hunted this unit for Deer? I drew the 3rd season and am just wondering what to expect as far as Deer numbers and quality? I Have driven through the unit on the way to hunt elk before. We are planning to head out later is summer and get familiar with the area (terrain) and then arrive a few days early to locate the deer, but just wondering what to expect and wher to start looking.

P.S. I have heard all the negative about 3 and 301. Muddy roads and tons of people. So lets just not worry about all of that. It is what it is and I can't change that. Just happy to draw and hope to find some deer.

I have hunted 3 and 301 for both deer and elk. It seems that the area is just decreasing year after year. There is just way to much hunting pressure, as you will soon find out the whole state of California will join you in getting a unit 3 and 301 deer tag. Last year while hunting the area in the third season I counted a combined 76 total camps in the axel basin area and who knows what the total amount was for the Maybell area. Anyway there are some decent deer but as you probably know there are not alot of trees in the area so getting to high points and glassing are a must. Your going to find the most deer early in the season but after the first day or two of season all the deer will be very spooked and hard to find or they will move onto private land which there is alot of in the 3 and 301 area especially in 301 area which is where alot of the elk and deer go after the shooting has begun. I not saying its impossible to kill a decent buck, but I think the divison of wildlife has issued way to many tags and it makes me more frustrated year after year, which is why I no longer plan to hunt the area anymore.

Ya I know but the units are very close to units 3 and 301 and alot of people that camp in 211 and 11 also hunt units 3 and 301, which I have done in the past. I was just trying to give a example of how crowed the general area gets come hunting season.

This is the first year for us in 211 2nd season any sugestions? Sounds like it's as bad as 3-301,we will get there thursday only 2 days to scout!

I hunted 301 back in 2004, however, I hunted private property that was surrounded by property property. I looked at the map and I saw very little public land. Some guys in the hotel were hunting public land and they were having a tough time finding places to hunt that did not have a guy behind every clump of sagebrush. I too think you need to scope out a good place for opening day and blast as soon as possible. I wish you luck.

Find a big rock to hide behind, I have hunted 3/301 in the past
and have had bullet's zinging over my head before, private land is best, if you can afford the tresspass fee!Kbuck

Ya for sure this is especially true when elk come thru its a total turkey shoot. Its kinda of sick to see its not how hunting should be. Its more like murder out there so many animals get wounded because guys just shoot into herds until an animal falls. I can't believe the things people do. I see it happen every year I feel for the divison of wildlife officers who have to sort it out every year.
