LAST EDITED ON Jul-03-07 AT 11:50PM (MST)[p]I've used the E.L.K call a bunch and try it for effect whenever I run across deer in the field year round. It's worth it's weight in gold when watching/glassing large groups of deer at distance, and when you hit it you'll find deer rushing out of the woodwork that you hadn't seen. I've found Fall bucks to be generally uninterested in vocalization calls but they will stand up and take a peek, or step out from behind a tree to check it out, without being "spooked" by it (from a distance).
It's likely that it's just my awful calling, but I've never had it do anything but make a deer bolt when used within 50 yards. Works great getting game to freeze when buggered, but so does a whistle.
I've done a lot of work in my career darting deer, and have found that most effective way to actually call deer into dart (bow) range is a predator call and have used it to great effect. (young bucks and does). Only problem is that you can't pick and choose which deer it will bring in, I mean it's like coyote calling- you do it all day and you'll get some deer in to dart, but if you spot a deer to try and call it in, it may have positive/negative effect, and in a hunting situation may not be a chance worth taking. If your out of options, give it a shot.
If you're a call fanatic like me, definately get the E.L.K call and practice with it. I recommend buying their "instruction" video too.
