Nevada Guys...I Need Help

I just found out that I drew a Nevada early rifle deer tag. The unit was my 5th choice. So I wasn't expecting to draw, but I am really excited, and want to make the most out of this hunt. It is unit 161-164. I don't have a clue about these units. I like to backpack, but also hunt from a truck camp depending on the situation. I do quite a bit of scouting near my home in Utah and could give some good info in return. I know that isn't worth much since I hunt the utah general seasons, but I have lucked out and taken a couple of good bucks recently. If you are a resident or non-resident, and know about these units, I would like to hear what you think.

Any info would be great. I am not asking for specific spots, just general unit info so I can get started in the research process. If anyone wants to PM me, that would be great too.

Thank you
Jason.

Congrats on the tag Jason. It should be a good hunt. I've never hunted the unit, but have researched it a little. We hunt just west of there in 171-173. The wilderness areas are the places that interested me. You should give the biologist at the Tonopah BLM office a call. Also the Forestry office is next door. They may share some info with you too. I made a trip there during the week and hit both offices. They were very helpful. Good luck!

Had friends that hunted it in the early 90's. Most of the guys drove 75 miles on gravel roads to get next to the Wilderness/high country. They found quality bucks in canyons off of the main road into the popular areas and no pressure. They're good hunters and took some 26-28" bucks. Quality went down in the late 90's due to the drought and they got off of that area. Advice from someone thats never set foot in the unit is not to overlook sage country on the way in if it has water in it.
Good luck!

I have never hunted the area for deer before, but it is always one of my choices. If I was to draw this tag I have always wanted to hunt the northern part of the Monitor's. There are two wilderness area's the Alta Toquima (Toquima range)and Table Mtn (Monitor range). Don't worry I think if you get out and hike alittle you'll find a good buck. That is one good thing about Nevada plenty of good area's. I would call the biologist in Tonopah his name is Tom Donham and is a great guy he'll help you out alot. He helped me out when I had my sheep tag. Good Luck I wish I could help out more Ryan

Thanks for the replies guys. I will definitely talk to game wardens, forest rangers, biologist, etc. I think that the biologists start to develop a set answer after they get asked the same question all the time. I will still talk to him though. It is big country and it is hard to know where to begin.

Thanks

try around jefferson. tabletops have more elk than deer. far northern end of the monitors isn't a bad choice either.

Maddog,

Have you hunted these units before? I sure would like to talk to someone who has had this tag.

Thanks for your reply,
Jason.

jason- it has been awhile since i have actually hunted these areas. have lots of relatives in that area that keep me up on it(i apply for this area also every year). good bucks can be found everywhere. i would try jefferson first. i lined out my uncle 2 years ago and he got a nice26" 4 x 4 from his jeep( my uncle is 73 yrs old)

hunted this area many times. I'd hunt the toquima range from water canyon south to northumberland road.
i've always seen good bucks in there and you'll be away from the people a bit.
also over in the moniter range, try the top of wallace canyon
lots of deer there but also more people.

try the hot creek range. there are some good bucks in there and not too many hunters. heres the best my party has taken to date and a nice set i picked up last year while archery hunting the unit

Try the hot creeks and the north end of the monitors. Also check out the nevada record book. It has listings on specific canyons within Nye county.
