Drew this NR tag. Plan on hunting the entire season.

Has anyone that has hunted these units give me some info on what I can expect? Anything I should know would be appreciated.

Not looking for any specifics, just trying to get pointed in the right direction.

Here's a little buck from 111 I saw last year during the elk hunt .

easy access to most of the area. Best odds of bigger deer are away from the heavy traffic in "Success Loop". Although its pretty good throught the whole unit. Good Luck!

I agree with jeremy. Just like any other area if you get off the road away from the crowds you will find bigger deer. I would suggest the northern end of success loop.Maybe the Kinsey canyon area. Also, there won't be as many hunters during the late hunt. Good luck!

congratulations, you should be in for a great hunt.In all my years of hunting the biggest buck i've ever seen in the field was on this hunt.Unfortunately that was in 1988 so i don't think it will do you much good.Good luck and let us know how you do.

Thanks for the replies! I'm getting pretty excited about this hunt, been hearing alot of good things.

Which side of the mountain range would be best to hunt? Looks like it could be a long ways around if the Kalamazoo road was blocked by snow.

I have bow buck hunted those units...didn't draw this year dang!

Jeremy is correct..get off the 'Front' side and around to the backside... road 893...

Google-Earth Ely and go check out the lay of the land.

I have hunted this area both early and late. Always stayed on the eastside, road 893. There are no services other than Ely. It is too far around to hunt from Ely. Lots of deer on all hunts. Deer will stay high even in the late hunt unless snow pushes them down. My partner and I took 2 170ish bucks on the late hunt 5 yrs. ago over in Blue Mass near the Utah border. Snow can limit vehicle access over Blue Mass. We have seen 190 plus bucks come out of this area. Good luck.

My inlaws own a ranch out there and I have spend some time out in the hills. Most of my time has been spent at Blue Mass and I have seen some good deer over there. Here is a pic of one of the bucks that I got on film. He was quite a ways from me and it may be hard to see but he is a good 180 class buck.

This one is a little smaller but still a nice buck.

Let me know if I can help.

Thanks,

Most of the forest service in that area was made into wilderness this past year, so you might want to get yourself into good walking shape, I know of a couple of people who have already been written up driving their ATV's in the wilderness. The area has good potential, but with elk hunters running around and all the other late deer hunters, it is a must to get away from the high traffic areas in order to have a crack at the big boys. Good luck and congrats on the tag.
