Well I really screwed up my application this year, filling it out on the last day, and meant to apply for the late rifle in 6, but inadvertantly entered the muzzleloader code, and I drew. Nevada 2 years in a row.

Anyway, I know nothing of hunting September mulies and don't even have a muzzleloader, but can borrow my buddy's. There are only 3 NR tags in this unit so hunters will be few and far between.

I have hunted unit 6 before, in 1998, and found some nice deer, but not at this time of year. I think I need more advice on behavior and how to hunt them, as opposed to unit info. Any help? Thanks much.

I think it is too far to travel from where you live, and for what you might see. Horrible unit this year after the fires from what I have heard, many tags given out for rifle and archery to get rid of the deer as there is no winter range left. Save your gas money and spend it on your family instead. You can find better hunts near your home. Eat the tag and move on. Hope someone else can add to this.

Zim,

Could be one of the best hunts in the state. it should be a real great hunt, if you need specifics shoot me a PM, Buncoboy, when's the last time you hunted it? Funny....

I like the unit also. Scout the highest mountains, and the deer will be on those early.
NVMDF are you Mike L.'s friend from Elko?

Dan,

One and the same Mike introduced us at his house, are you still up in Sun Valley?

I have nothing to add on the unit since I don't know it. I will say if you need help with the ML see the ML forum on this site. There is a lot of info there and a few of us might even know a thing or two. I would be glad to help. Ron

Alothough I still remember some long ago posts from Zim with a certain lack of tact... Area 6 has some big deer, and may still have the habitat in the state. Its a huge area, and not all of it has burned. In my opinion, the muzzy hunt is probabbly the worst time to see bucks in NV. They usually shed the velvet by end of August, the feed has definately dryed up (especially this year), they are starting to grow winter coats when its usually summer temps, and a bowhunter may have reminded them of human intentions. If you hunt hard and long, you should get a pretty descent buck. My daughter will be hunting 6 on the junior hunt this year.

Well, That is what I was wondering. At least I have some kind of hunt this year. I drew no other tags. I enjoy trying to get close anyway, like archery. So I will look at the bright side.

This hunt will definitely take a bit more researching than others. Best look for areas with terrain conducive to close stalking. I like a challenge and this may be it. Never been on a western state muzzleloader hunt.

Shon,
Part time, am building restaraunt in So. California as my biz partner and myself bought the restaraunt and bar across the street. Did you draw any good tags this year? I think last time you had a good antelope tag?

>They killed the biggest non-typical in
>the state last year on
>this hunt (220+). It still
>should be a good hunt.

I guess that's if you don't count the 300"er out of 221.

Zim, hunt the Independant Mountains and hunt high. Muzzleloader hunting is a blast and a great time to find Nevada bucks. Most of the velvet will be gone but a couple of deer will still be sporting it around. September....not too hot and not too cold. Be ready for both extremes as you will probably have some hot days and some cold days and sometimes snow. Muzzleloader season is my favorite time to hunt high mountain muleys here in Nevada (although I've never archery hunted yet) with the bucks hanging out at high to midway on the mountains. I've never hunted area 6 but had the area 10 muzzy tag for the last two years. Everybody that I know that has hunted 6 says good things about it. I think you've got a great tag and I also think that you will love muzzy hunting. Goodluck and let us know how it goes, fatrooster.

I have recently seen some deer at the top of Yankee Bill summit. Go to the top they are up there I have hunted the zone before and I know well I guess everyone knows that those dder there stay high most of the year. There was some great sign although I did not see anything, on the road from Yankee Bill to The reservation. Keep looking the deer stay high and I have had good success during the regular season up high. Look on Hicks Mountain and Merrit Mountain and hike.

Dan,
How could you leave the Wood River Valley, or is it just a summer winter thing? Have tou talked to Mike? He drew his archery Elk tag this year, and is all over me to film for him, but I don't know if I can sit water day after day. I also drew a rifle Elk tag that starts Aug. 1. Yes, I had that antelope tag when we met, I ended up with a 84" er. I also drew a area 10E rifle tag this year. Had to put the bow down the last few years, just not enough time between work a new home, a new baby, ect. ect. ect. but have done very well hunting deer in Id. the past two seasons. if you ever get down this way look us up, I'll buy you a beer, and if I'm up that way I'll look you up, my wife loves to go spend a weekend at the Knob Hill.

Boy if your staying at the knob hill things must be good! I am having a kid (my first) sometime this week. Did you get a bull tag? Mike got a bull archery tag? Wow! I'll have to call him. I will hunt Idaho and Montana this year. Pretty much went for bonus points as I know with new kid time will be short.

Zim,

This is a pretty good unit for good bucks, though numbers are down quite a bit due to some depredation hunts. The winter range for 6 is shot. Best bet would be to hunt high in the Independence and Bull Run range. Basically 062. 061 also has good deer from what I have seen. I can PM you my # if you want, I talked to you last year from huntingnet.com as charlie brown

i was just out there today doing some fishing and just scouting around the vegetation is growing back THICK AND QUICK, it is really green where all of it burnt last year i was really surprized.

Area 6 was on fire again last night. I-80 was shut down over by the Hunter exit and it was burning there and over at the Carlin Tunnels. The Independant Range should be ok though. fatrooster.

Well my hunt is 5 weeks away now. Plans are coming along. Bought a TC Omega from Cabela's and shot it yesterday. Very nice gun, easy to clean. Will shoot again this weekend off my sticks.

Booked a Delta flight right into Elko on September 8. Could only find a Trailblazer to rent, but it's a 4WD. Found a local vendor to ship my gun ahead to save baggage weight. Also ordered powder & primers to be there when I arrive.

Got maps and a game plan in place.

Looking forward to hunting this early season.
