I just moved here from Ohio last year (about time) and I drew unit 54 3rd season this year. I live in Colorado Springs and plan on making a few scouting trips that way this summer and fall before the season and was wondering if anyone could give me some pointers on where to start. I'm not asking for my hand to be held to a specific waterhole or anything but any place to start a good hike with the scope and binos. My friends call me "the goat" in camp so terrain and distance shouldn't be too much of an issue. Please PM me if you prefer. Thanks in advance for any help.

Had you been accumulating points while in Ohio? If so, how many points did you have when applying this year...as a resident I assume? -CB-

I was applying for points only while going to school in Ohio. I had five points as a resident.

Your name has to lead me to think you are from crested butte. If so you have to know that area fairly well. Do you have any starter points as far as my scouting trips go? Any info. would be greatly appreciated. This is the first decent tag I have ever drawn in 10 years of applying in various states so I am determined to end it with a bang, literally!

Nope...from KS. I have a cabin north of Crested Butte up the Slate River Valley. I primarily hunt Unit 55...however the northern portion of 54 south of Kebler Pass would be a good area for you to scout. Since I don't know a great deal about Unit 54 I can really only be of assistance for techniques and advice for high country hunting. Good Luck on your hunt...you will do great! -CB-

If you want to hike back into the wilderness areas then it may be worth it to see some animals. But once your hunt comes around my advice would be to have an ATV or a vehicle you can cover some ground in. you will want to spend hours glassing.

Thanks for the advice. Do you normally see that in the 3rd season alot of the deer have moved down to lower elevation or will they still be hanging up around tree line. I know that weather is the major key here but shouldn't the beginning stages of the rut be coming around. Just wondering with that time of year if it is worth getting up high just to hear all the shooting down low due to pre rut activity.
