Hi All,

When you drive to the end of the road heading toward Lightning Ridge you hit the DLL fence. Is there public land beyon the fence that is accessible? Is it a long way around the fence?

Thanks,

G

There is a little parking area right by the DLL fence on the public side. You just park right there and then take the little trailhead that pretty much follows the fence line for quite a ways. If you keep hiking down the ridge, you will eventually drop down into Wheatgrass canyon or bear Hollow (both mostly public). From there if you keep going you will end up at the parking are at the inlet to Causey Res.

The general rule with lightning ridge is you need snow. When it snows the bulls on DLL sometimes cross over and move around a bit. Most the guys that hunt that area are just waiting for a bull to step foot over the fence. I have see a few carcasses that were half and half on the boundary line.

IMO it's too much of a risk, and not very productive anyway. I would find another area where you have a large public area to hunt. You don't want to have to deal with the DLL guys if your bull dies on there.

The best time to hunt that area is either early archery before everybody starts stirring around, or late Muzzy elk (with some snow).

Hope this helps.

Years back I hunted over there and got into the elk in wheatgrass canyon during the preseason scouting trip. When the opening morning of the archery hunt arrived, I went in there and found the deseret folks riding their horses through the public land side, stirring up the game. Also the sheep herder in the area drove his sheep down the deseret border on lightning ridge eating everything down to the dirt (public land side of the border). Those folks on deseret sure know how to ruin it for the public land do it yourselfer. Just so they can have the animals to themselves. Haven't been back since because I have found much better areas to hunt elk on public land. My opinion, they need to put up a high fence to protect their "prize elk and deer". Good Luck.

Been there done that. Only if the fellas on horses would show there faces instead of wearing coveralls and black beanies to cover there sad faces. Bunch of Loosers

I've killed. Few decent bulls in that area. Just pray for snow and hunt during the middle of the week when most weekend warriors are home working

at least I am not the only one. Ha ha so much for public land DYI in that area.

I have hunted it alot dll doesn't like me at all if you shot a bull and it goes on there dll property they will not let you itretrieve it. you can not step one inch on there property. you have to call the dnr and they retrieve the animal. besides all the sheep that they run up and down the border and the trucks up and down and horses and peopleit is pritty hard to kill elk up there. over the archery hunt I know the sheep were out in that area for 3 weeks there is nothing left to eat so good luck they really hate it when public hunters kill there bulls.

I didn't forget about the chopper. Just did not want to get into it again with the DLL Defenders that say none of the above goes on up there.

I've since moved on and could care less how they screw the average ethical hunter who hunts the borders of their property.

If you want to hunt the area, be prepared to be disappointed. At least take all the negative responses as constructive criticism for that area, that way you won't be too disappointed at what you witness.

I went up there today and only saw a few elk tracks. Busted some grouse but not to many elk running through there. Good luck to you on your hunt.

LAST EDITED ON Sep-23-12 AT 08:47AM (MST)[p]I would never fly a chopper and piss off rifle hunters. Surprised some nut has not shot it down.
