My elk season is OVER...

LAST EDITED ON Sep-20-12 AT 11:08AM (MST)[p]I had a nice fall of elk hunting lined up. First, I was going to eastern Oregon with two buddies to bowhunt an area new to us, then going from there down to Fishlake to help a buddy on a muzzy tag he drew, and that FLEH is hosting us on. That all changed on Monday...

On Sunday, I was driving to our camp where my buddies were all set up and scouting. Things looked good as I saw a nice 300" class bull with about 15 cows on my way to camp. Monday morning, we went scouting and found a couple large groups of elk, with some nice bulls, on private land that bordered NF so we decided to move camp as they were quite a way from where they'd set our camp. We went back and start breaking down camp. Just before we grab my "Block" target, I decide to take a few practice shots. On the first shot, something gives out in my left shoulder, the side that I hold my bow with.

I tore my rotator cuff! Sh*t!!! I was in a ton of pain the remainder of the day, and dumb enough to keep on lifting gear and packing boxes. I couldn't sleep hardly at all on Monday night, so first thing Tuesday I headed in to Burns to visit a doctor, where she confirmed that I'd likely torn my rotator. I couldn't (and still can't) lift my arm more than about 9" away from my side. The doc gave me a prescription for a steroid to get rid of the inflammation, told me to ice every half hour and a painkiller that worked wonders. Percocet (oxycodone) is a wonder drug when it comes to severe pain!

Now I need to see a physical therapist that I know, before heading to the doctor. It's a good thing that I know a couple top orthopedic surgeons who work on players of the Giants and A's organizations, as I'll have one of them fix my shoulder.

My elk season, and duck season, deer season, hell probably all of my hunting season, is over before it started, all due to a small muscle in my shoulder.

THIS SUCKS!

Wow! Every hunters worse nightmare! Sorry man. At this point though, take your time and let it heal/get it fixed. Don't rush it or you may be out next season too!

Best of luck to ya.

WOW, that does suck. I fill for you. Hope all works out and hope that maybe you can get out in hunting camp and enjoy the outdoors even if you cannot hunt. Best of luck to you.

Good luck, I had a shoulder rebuilt last year, and lost 20% of the use of it. It's no longer an easy thing to pull a bow.

Dan....this REALLY sucks!!! I am really feeling bad that you are not going to make it down here to hunt with Jim. I hope that we can find him a bull!

Get feeling better and keep in touch!

Bummer Dan :(

Hope you can get it repaired and back in order for next season.

Cheers,
Pete

Been there done that TWICE, same shoulder as yours. Once you have your operation to fix it, DO EXACTLY what the therapist says to do! Good luck to you!

My greatest fear every year is some stupid injury keeping me out of the field. I've been battling some leg issued from DVT this year, whcih has curtailed my hunting but not eliminated it. Good luck with the rehab. The doctors and therapists can get us back in the game.

Man that stinks! I've had surgery to repair torn rotator cuffs in both shoulders so I know just what pain you are describing. You should be back in the game in plenty of time for bow season next year, just listen to the doc and the physical therapist like one of the other guys said. I once put off knee surgery for a month so as not to miss the whitetail rut and drug my leg around in searing pain the whole time. Not sure I'd do it again but wouldn't have done it any other way at the time. Best of luck and hope you can still enjoy some time in the woods this fall.

I have 1 word for you....CORTISONE!!!! I was in the same situation last year and went in and got a Cortisone shot and wow what a difference. I know it is only a 6 month fix but that sure beats the alternative.

Boy, thats a serious bummer. Maybe you can still go and camp with your buddies. BTW, Get rid of the Oxy!!! Find something else. Take care, Tony

Dan, Sorry to hear of the shoulder problem. FLEH was telling me about it earlier today. That sucks. Take it easy and do what you're told. I always try to push the fact and try to re-hab ahead of schedlue and it never pays off. I was thinking of a Pizza night at the Cabin next week. ;)
I told FLEH that I was going with him this fall to your place hunting ducks too..... Take care my friend...

Rick, it's funny that you mentioned PIZZA. I was telling Jim, my buddy who has the tag, about you and Beverly bringing pizza up to my camp on Monroe that year, and how much I enjoyed your hospitality. Jim left today, is spending the night in Ely and will be in Richfield tomorrow. If you get to meet him, check out his muzzleloaders. No modern gun for him, he has a beautiful custom built Creedmore rifle that shoots very well. He's killed a ton of stuff with it, inlcuding a big Brown Bear that is about ten feet from me as I type this. He killed it on Kodiak and for many years it was (maybe still is?) the Longhunter Society World Record Brown Bear. Jim didn't have anyhwere to put the mount, so he asked me if I'd mind storing it for a few months till he could work something out to put it in his home. That was about 15 years ago...

Jim is a fantastic guy, and I'm sure he'll have a fine hunt with Jason and whoever else joins in on this hunt. I really wish I could be there, but right now it's "Better living through drugs" for me.

Rick, Well with the the new pizza joint in Kosharem it will be alot easier to get it up there warm !
Ca enjoyed your post a few years ago (?) on your monroe hunt. I will stop by Jason's on the way up tonight.
Just hope I dont have to kick the mountain man out of my bed :-(

I fill your pain last year I was at the Book Cliffs (Utah) on the Deer Bow Hunt. I pulled back on a buck then decided not to shoot and let up and must of pulled something in my draw back arm when I let up. Because when I tried to pull to full draw after that I had no strength to get it back all the way. I went back to camp and let up on the limbs a little so I was able to come to full draw. And went back out knowing it was a matter of time before my arm stiffened up and I was done. We ran into a good Buck a few minutes later not the one I was hoping for. I had one shot left in me so I let him have it. I made a clean shot and I was done. By the time we got him back to camp the pain set in and it was over. I'm glad I was able to fill my tag.
