Prineville, OR

Hey all,

Quick question for any of you who have hunted in te central OR area. I recently took a job in Prineville and am planning on bowhunting deer this fall. I know the south side of the highway (Ochoco) is a draw unit, so am looking to hunt in the Grizzly unit probably. Do any of you have any info on the amount of private land tied up in the unit other than what is listed in the regs? I guess I want to know how well stuff is posted, and is access pretty easy. Not looking to get any hot spots, just some general info on the area. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

John Day area is good for deer.

The north side of 26 is the Grizzly unit and there is quite a bit of private land, but enough public ground and timber company owned ground to hunt on. you'll find an oh my god amount of hunters there and not many deer, south of the river in the Maury unit is a little better. if you've hunted Oregon much you already know not to expect much for deer anyway, but as muleyman says east towards John Day would be worth the drive.
