Horn Growth

I was just wondering if there is anybody who knows when the horns stop growing and start to harden up. It seems like archery season is right around the corner but the horn growth i've seen doesnt justify sticking one just yet.

He is refering to nevada I think sageman. All velvet should be gone and antlers hard by mid september...and most will start shedding velvet mid to late august

Here is one that I would be willing to stick, that is if I couldn't get closer to the bigger buck that I didn't get a picture of. Sorry for the quality of the picture.

That bigger buck (that you didn't get a picture of), might end up to be the same one that you never got a shot at, via passing this great buck! lol...sorry I am the bird in hand type...

No I guess I agree. If things work out hunting like they did scouting I better take this deer if given the opportunity. Not that this isn't a good buck the other one was just bigger. I guess a little smarter too.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-11-07 AT 12:12PM (MST)[p]horns always are hard, it's antlers that are soft then harden after they are shed of their velvet. some may say horns, antlers what difference does it make. . . well, it does make difference in some circles so I suggest calling antlers antlers, and horns horns. A guy does not have to lie and die by that, but in general it's best to adopt the correct word.

In my observation, antlers harden generally starting the first of september for mule deer, and second week of august for elk. There is no exact data as some elk and some deer harden sooner and some later, so you have to consider mid aug through the end of september. Keep in mind that the antler starts to harden even before the velvet is completely shed. . . the bottom of the antler hardens first then it chokes off the blood to the rest of the antler and it hardens, th "velvet" either sheds off, or it's rubbed of or both. the process is quick, they go from velvet to brown antler if just a couple days. there is some variablity, some pack the velvet longer and some dont rub it off as well and some done brown up very much so all of this is general. as soon as you get specific someone says they saw a bone hard buck in July or a velvet buck in november. . . it happens. . .

My Bad TFinalshot_ "ANTLER" growth....yea, I guess what I was looking for here was some insight on the subject. Thanks for the correction and info.

Great post Tony. the horn/antler deal is kinda like knowing and following the rules of poker- It's not that big of a deal if you loose the dealer chip, or bet out of turn or whatever, but I agree with Tony, ?if you're gonna play poker.......?

To expand a little bit- the antler cycle varies similarly to the rut and can be weather dependant. If you pay close attention over time you can predict an early or late rut based on when you see them rub. I have a theory that a good antler year is one where the weather conditions cause an early drop/growth- good green summer- then a late rub/rut. As antler growth rates are about the same no matter what they're eating.

Its almost like wondering if the groundhog saw his shadow or not...

I am pretty sure the cows determine the rut.
