'08 Guided Deer Hunt

I had a friend ask me recently for some outfitter recommendations for a 2008 guided deer hunt. My experience in this area is limited at best so I thought I would reach out to some fellow MMer's for suggestions.

What he is looking for is the opportunity to be taken back into some remote areas via horse back and have a legitimate opportunity at a trophy class buck. He did not give me his definition of a "trophy", but let's use 180 as a bench mark.

If you have had the opportunity to hunt with an outfitter in this type of situation and wouldn't mind passing on your recommendations I would appreciate it.

This should allow him to at least start having some conversations with some quality outfits and make his decision from there. I would normally have him ask for suggestions himself but computer's and the internet are foreign to him so he asked his "cubicle jockey" friend for a little assistance.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am printing the information and will pass it along.

It looks like the Wyoming guys are well represented. Any suggestions for Colorado?

I second Nontypical outfitters for a Wyoming high country hunt. Wes has also posted some really neat pictures in the past of the Nevada high country.

don't use dan at trophy chasers. He is a scumbag. when i sent him a deposit on a future hunt, the outfitters raised the price that year and dan did not know about it. Dan never sent me a receipt so i had to pay the extra or bail. So i decided to bail and what happens? Dan bounces my deposit check. Scumbag but finally got my dpeosit back. When i spoke directly to the outfitters and told him the situation, he cut Dan off as a a consultant. Beware!

yes. he may not be a scumbag and may have some great hunting opportunities, but he was trusting with me. Make sure you get everything in writing with him if you want to do business with him.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-18-07 AT 11:33AM (MST)[p]i know someone else had a bad experience with him too. although i do not like to bash sponsors on this website, because i love this site, but that guy is just plain shady and the outfitter wanted nothing to do with him after i told him my experience. Dan also said he knew guys who had hounds to track mountain lions for me on my ranch in california. as you know, that is illegal and can get into alot of trouble.

Warren....is that true, it is not too late to accumulate pts. for WY? Deer or Elk?

Thanks guys, you have passed on some good information.

Wes, I got your PM and will pass your information along to my friend. This is an option definitely worth considering.

I know of a couple outfitters that are top notch and have areas that hold trophy class bucks. You're gonna pay for it though. Keep in mind that it's more than just the finding a capable outfitter. The area hunted needs to have a huntable population of Trophy class bucks (180+ B&C). So do your homework. There are a lot of good outfitters out there that can put a guy on a 140, 150, 160 class buck but the 180's and higher trophy's can be a bit tougher (and more expensive).

Hey if you guys are ticked about dan's services go post your comments on the product review section.
