I have been scouting an area for black tail. Trying to decide where to hang a stand. Question to you seasond hunters. Do the bucks try to avoid the thick brush so not to damage their antlers during velvet. I found some good trails with a lot of activity in thick brush but I am thinking it must be doe's. Also finding some trails on open ridges. Do bucks during the growing period avoid the thick stuff to protect their antlers?

during Velvet bucks avoid the bushes, bugs(buy going high if they can)or anything that may rub, bite, or bruise there sensitive antlers.
that benefits hunter because it seems to put those buck in semi open type environment, the trails maybe bucks, does, bears!
I've seen avg 3pts in narrow game trails and those bucks were no more wide than the trail.
but then I seen them go straight up instead of busting heavy brush....hang your stand close to a trail that goes to water.
good luck

If you're talking CA A Zone, the bucks have pretty muched hardened up by mid-July and they'll shed thier velvet anytime now. They are switching to late-summer hard-horned patterns, if they haven't already. I'd have to agree with rackmaster about hanging your stand on a trail that leads to water and stay in your stand until noon if you can. Blacktail bucks will often make a mid-morning trip to water.buckspotter7
