Two hunt decision

I have drawn two deer tags this year: Wyoming K starts Oct. 1 and Utah Southern General Unit, starts Oct. 20. I have hunted Wyoming K 3 times, never have hunted the Utah Southern unit.

Question--for you guys that know the areas. Would you go to both, over 1000 miles for me and have shorter hunts, or choose one and go for a longer period of time?

With what you know about K and the success you've had there, I would think you could make that a fairly short hunt(4-5 days). I think S. UT would require more of your time..

If I had to make that decision, I would choose to hunt Region K in Wyoming. There are some toads roaming those there hills, and I don't mean frogs, either!!
Perhaps you can harvest a buck in Wyoming early and still be able to hunt Utah.
Southern Utah is also worth trying to get in a few days of hunting. Good luck whatever you choose.

We have had good success in Wyoming K, and I know the area. But, I would really like to hunt Southern Utah, even though I have never been there. That's why I think we need more time in Utah.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-02-07 AT 12:52PM (MST)[p]The Utah hunt is only five days, anyway you look at it, it's not very long. It's somewhat of a madhouse, but it can be productive. If you tell me where you want to hunt I might be able to point you in the right direction.

I'd hunt K until you kill and then head straight down South and finish things up down there. I had a similar siutuation going last year. I drew 102 which opened on 10/15 and I also drew the Book Cliffs which opened about a week later. I just hunted in 102 until I took my buck and then headed straight to the Book Cliffs. It's a LOT to cramb into 1 month but I know most people won't feel sorry for you. I know they didn't feel sorry for me last year and I'm having a hard time feeling sorry for you right now! :)

Best of luck to you,

stick with what you know...are you going to scout Utah?
its a mad house, best know where you want to be or you'll
hate it. From here on out Gas prices maybe going to go thought the roof! Sept is shot..(should go up to $3.68 a gal and could top #4.00 a barrel before it drop late fall says AAA!).
Utah is short and I see more staying the whole 5 days instead just hunting the weekends!
I would hunt WY.. head home and start going though the decoys and waders!! however I will be in NM unit 2b then Colorado(last week of Oct-Nov 5th) and thats the kinda the same boat as you I never been to Co but I am going to meet up with 4 or 5 guys there who been hunting that unit for years!!! And I am worried about gas too round trip its about 2200 mi).

Wyoming definitly. dedicate your time to getting a nice buck there. keep in mind that if you cut it short to hunt Utah you will only have 5 days to get a deer, and if you don't that's a lot of wasted gas.

Rackmaster,

No, we will not be able to scout. And one of my hunting buddies can only go on one of the hunts. I want to make sure he goes on the best one.

i hunt southern utah. i've hunted it for 5 years now. i would highly consider doing both. we have pulled some really big deer of those southern mountains. utah holds some very, very large bucks. i would plan on a week of hunting utah though.

Hunt both. Go to Wyoming but learn as much as you can about Utah and how to get to the remote areas where you can get away from the "madhouse." New country is always fun but can be frustrating at times because of lack of knowledge of the area. This is the place to learn what you can about the area. After you hunt it you will know if you ever want to go back to hunt it again. Everybody knows that Gargantuan Mulies live in Southern Utah. Just my opinion. fatrooster.

I WOULD JUST GIVE THE TAGS TO THE TROPHYMOSSBACK AND STAY AT HOME WITH THE PRETTY ONE! ( you could probably get him to come by and pick them up) think of the money you would save!
