Hey guys headin into the gunnison basin this year for deer second season!! how would you all rate this hunt?? do you think that second season will be hard to hunt? Just trying to get an overview

I recently moved from there. What area are you hunting in the basin? You should have no problem killing a 160 - 180 buck. I would hold out for something bigger. ~Duckman

You shouldn't have a problem killing a good buck. The question is how much patience you have. You'll see a lot of deer but can you hold out for a bigger deer? I would try to if I were you.

I'm starting to get psyched up again. My recovery from a cervical disk fusion is not going quite as planned, but I think I will try to punch my Unit 67 O2R tag. I was starting to contemplate returning the tag and keeping my points, so please talk me out of this brainfart. Haven't shot a rifle since the surgery and, frankly, am worried about shooting from the bench. Plan to go alpine hunting for blacktails this weekend with the kid, so I'll get a chance to see how it feels hiking, etc.

I keep looking at the tag numbers. 120 guys (some gals) chasing deer and 300 going after elk. No everyone is hunting alone, so there are maybe 500 people after big game. Nothing like hunting in Alaska, but I'm not whining. Most of the elk hunters are above the deer and drive them to the lower treeline boundry?

I'll be very happy with a 170 class 4x4, and won't hesitate on coming all the way home empty. Doesn't look like there is very much oakbrush or quakies in this unit. Pretty much dark timber transitioning into sage, right? I've got the 7.5 minute quads taped together on the wall at work so I have something to daydream about.

I tell everyone that hunts that area this; in the second season find the deer you want preseason and camp on that deer. Spend as much time in the unit ahead of season as you do hunting the area. In that season the bucks generally are not in the rut but the big boys will hang out near a group of does and may check on those does during the day then he will go lay down by himself in some thick sage. Depending on the weather the deer may be scattered from the high country to the low sage. I have seen deer in both areas in that first deer season. You have a great tag in your hand and make the most of it. Great glass is a great tool in this hunt. I wouldn't say the hunt will be hard but the hunt will be what you make of it. I will say that you have a chance to experience a world class hunt that a lot of guys would have to pay lots of money to go on. The trophys are there you just have to find them. If your not familiar with scoring deer I would try to get familiar with mule deers antlers. Good luck and wish you the best of luck!!

You could return your tag, forfeit your $$$, keep your points and wait for another 5-7 years to draw a 3rd season tag. I'd keep the tag and make the most of it.

Ditto big bucks in Gunnison Basin. Be prepared for tons of elk hunters, doe hunters. Those guys hunting elk can be helpful for you ,if you ask.

That program is a very powerful tool. I had 2 pictures of a buck taken by a coworker a couple of years back in the same unit I will be hunting. The digital images had the landscape in the background. I was able to pinpoint the kill location to within 100 yards by tilting and rotating the views. Pretty darn amazing.

Would anyone out there be interested in directing me on where to take my 72 yr old father with a 3rd season, 55 tag? 180 type would be awesome....

I check PMs.

Thanks,

Can your dad hike up into a high country basin around 10,500-11,500? If no snow at that time, that is where the 180+ class bucks will still be. -CB-

Hey CB,
I tried to send you a private message the other day, and just wonderiing whether you got it. You'll remember I drew a muzzleloading tag for unit 55, and you told me about some areas to hunt. I might try to get up there this weekend and scout a little. Any thoughts

Check your private message inbox soon. I'll be sending you some helpful info. hopefully before you leave this weekend to scout. -CB-

Thanks. I really do appreciate it. I am getting very anxious to get out in the field again. I'll wait to hear from you.
Don
