I LOVE Nevada! I had the opportunity to tag along on a bull hunt with my good friend Chad and his 16 year old son Kyle who drew the unit with only 3 points. Chad and his son spent the 1st 3 days of the hunt on the mountain but didn't find a bull that Kyle wanted to take so early in the hunt. Because of school and football obligations they headed home for a few days. I was kind of glad they didn't fill the tag because it gave me an opportunity to go back up on the next trip
We left home late Friday night after Kyle's game and didn't get to camp until 2:30am. A storm had rolled in and it was snowing pretty good when we finally arrived. Chad's buddy Matt was already there with his trailer which was warm and cozy. We spent the morning glassing and looking for fresh tracks. We glassed a handful of cows a small 5 point bull but nothing Kyle was interested in.
After lunch we made a game plan to head up a little higher from where we spotted the cows earlier. We broke out of some thick trees into an open burn when Chad spotted an elk about a mile up the canyon. I put the spotter on it and could see it was a solid bull. Kyle liked what he saw and we were off. It took 2 hours of hiking through some steep and nasty country. We spent a lot of time on our hands and knees crawling through the mahogany, sage and snow. We finally crested the top and he was up feeding at 175 yards. Matt got his 300 ultra set up as the bolt on Kyle's 7mm was frozen solid and he couldn't chamber a round. Kyle put 2 rounds into the bull and he was down. We were all hooping and hollering like a bunch of girls This is Kyle's 1st bull.
