Heres a Huge 2x2 we spotted right after my wife got her elk. Early January (Navajo Rez). The rut was in full swing and he had about 10-15 does running with him. There was a small spike running with him but I guess he felt that he wasn't a threat. I have a friend whose been looking for this guy but is no where to be found during the times hes had a tag. The only time he sees this buck is during the rut, he comes out of nowhere, then dissappears again.

Anyone know how wide he might be?

Mike

I would shoot him just to get him out of the gene pool. You will see more like him in years to come. He is a pretty nice forky though.

I've been watching a big forky like that the last 4 weeks or so here in UT - he leads around a crew of other bucks. It's sure going to be tempting to let the air out of him if the chance presents itself!

That Buck is the exact reason point restrictions don't work. Leave him in the gene pool and that is all you will get. I am not arguing with the warden but that is all that buck has probably been in his entire life. He looks in good shape. He has put more food to his body than his antlers. Had one just like him at 80 yards a couple of years ago in NM. Would have loved just to get rid of him but NM at the time had a 3 point rule.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-04-07 AT 11:48PM (MST)[p]pcha- you may very well be right (about him always being a forkey) I've just seen a lot of examples of 4x4's coming out 2x's after they hit retirement age. They still eat we'll but their hormones just aren't what they used to be. Bull Crazy's example of a forkey leading around a group of bucks kinda sounds like that's the case, and from the pics this ol grey faced buck certainly isn't a youngster. But again, I'm certainly not trying to argue that point with you- he could just have crappy antlers. (He does have brow tines- so he'd of been legal in NM anyway.)

You'll never get an argument out of me for point restrictions- I put a whole thread on here about why point restrictions suck and the research to back it, no one wanted to get into it and the thread sunk like a rock.

I'd love to see a buck like him in bow range! Great big thick body, you know his antler are nice....

You guys are funny.. Id say 26 inches maybe.. And I sure the hell dont think thats an old deer..

Rammu, Obviously from my post I'm not seeing it the same way. I see a buck with a big body, grey face, big ol swoled up neck, Heavy massed (albeit crapped out) antlers and a damn nice herem of does-
Now I realize this is a kinda petty thing to even be discussing, and I really don't want this to be interpreted as the start of some kind of debate- But If I'm full of crap I'd like to fix it.

What exactly is it about that buck that makes you think he's young? Are you talking yearling? 2 1/2- 3 1/2? I don't mean this fececiously. I know enough to know I don't nearly know everything- what am I missing?

Well this buck is obviously a mature buck, just looking at his body and size in general. I agree with a previous post about antler restictions as I was hunting in one of Californias X zones in the 80's and I found a buck just like this one in the photos that someone shot and left because the zone had a 3 point restiction. I reported where I found it to the fish and game but they did not do anything about it at least not during the 4 days I was hunting in the area. The buck was 27 1/4 wide, heavy mass and a huge body. It was a shame to see the deer go to waste. I found one other smaller fork someone shot on the same hill a couple of years later.. same senario, two point buck in a 3 point zone. I guess some people shoot first and count points later.

Hard to tell by the pics but he looks to have 1"+ Eye gaurds, That makes him legal in our state with the 3pt rule.

"3 Pt. Minimum: A legal deer taken in these GMUs must
have at least 3 antler points on one side. (A 3x3, 3x2, or
3x1 are legal in a 3 Pt. min. unit.) All antler points must
be at least one inch long measured on the longest side.
Eye guards are antler points when they are at least one
inch long."

i saw one of these 3 years ago in pecos (nm) during the muzzy hunt. huge body, tall antlers. could not shoot because of the antler rule at the time. i watched it for a good 20 minutes at 20 yards and less. he was with 2 does just strolling, eating and licking himself.
if i see one like that this year during the archery hunt, he is as good as dead.

He looks like an older deer to me.

I would put him at about 27" wide.

He has all the classic signs of an older deer; roman nose, blocky head, swayed back, pot gut, deep chest.

Good picture to dispell the myth that the number of points has anything to do with age.

Thanks for all the inputs. Me, myself, i'd say 28". I know that my friend, who is a guide on the Rez, has seen this buck says hes been looking for this guy at least 4 years now. I think this will his 5th season. But if I see him during archery season... i'd thread him with an arrow. Good luck to everyone.

Mike

28 days and a wake up till opening morning!

Shot one like him about 10-11 years ago. 25" inside spread, 24" tall off the skull plate, real heavy. Took him through the game check station and they said he was 4.5 years old. wasn't real young or retirement age, we figured he had always been a forky.

Hey I know that buck Some friends and I got him on video last winter w/the same herd. I had to review my tapes but that is him.

Judging by the size of his head & body, he no youngster.
He's just got some horrible genetics and someone needs to take him out of the gene pool to slow that bad bug down before too many more deer get it (which is impossible to completely stop).
I have seen giant two points like this in the Book Cliff's and the Henry's. You see them walking away from you and they look huge and get you all excited.....until they turn their head. :-(
