Boys first Elk season

Does anyone know of a good late season area for a youth to bag a cow? We moved here last summer and don't the state that well. We hunted in unit 15(blue area) around Shoe and Stocking creek during the 2nd rifle season and did not see any cows to shoot at. I talked to people around our camp and all said it was a bad year. We didn't hear much shooting either. My boys are 13 and 15 years old and are excited about their first Elk season. We live near Denver. Thanks for your help.

As i recall, most of the western part of the state opens to youth with unused cow tags on Dec 1. (Some dates vary). There are lots of elk around the Craig area, and although a bit of a drive from Denver, you should see lots of elk from the roads in this region especially if there is snow on the ground. Units 10, 11, 2, and 3.
