WY Region G and UT Henry Mtns

Among mule deer hunters this year, I am one of the lucky ones as I have both a WY Region G and a UT Henries tag in my pocket. I've got the Henries covered as I know the area reasonably well, but am in need of some guidance for WY. I plan to be in WY for opening week with a backpack on but need to figure out which 25 square miles to start some pre-season scouting. While I don't expect anyone to share their "No Tellum Ridge" location, I'd love to get some advice on general areas, elevations, etc. where a guy might expect to find success.

That Henries tag is worth 100 G tags, IMO. Put all your time, money, and effort into that hunt and let the Wyoming hunt just be a nice outing in the woods.....

:( Somebody didn't like bouncing betty :(

Agree with 257 the Wyo hunt would be a armed camping trip, IMO
The UT tag would get 100% of my time and money.

I'll 3rd that. Henries tag is worth more than 100 G tags. I think G has gotten to be just a nice camping trip with incredible scenery.

I was always partial to Giraffe creek, it is private where it goes into Thomas fork, so go over the hill a little further north off of salt creek on hwy 89. Glass the mountain just to the west of Porcupine creek, again, right off 89 before you hit Smoot. I had a ranch south of Smoot for many years and killed very good bucks above the hwy. People over look the small timber pockets!

I second what you say about the two areas. You must have seen the same young lady riding her horse down Greys River Rd. that we did last year!

"...armed camping trip" is exactly what it is now...with the invasion of the wolves. I say this from first-hand experience.

Well here is the update to Chapter One of my mule deer hunting this year. I got my Region G buck on day 8 of a solo backpack trip. He's a real horse body-wise, has a 33" spread and grosses 190 despite the "crab claw" front forks. It feels pretty good to have a buck like this on the ground in addition to having a Henry Mountains tag in my pocket for later this month.

Way to live up to your name dude!!! Not bad for an "armed camping trip", Major congrats.

Wow! Damn you did well and still have a tag to do even better if things go right! Good luck!

That's a great Buck, "Armed Camping" looks like it's the only way to go, Good Luck on the Ut tag, hope you get another monster.

Way to go man. I love how early the main beam splits, makes for some serious G2's.

He really looks like an old horse too, did you save a tooth to get him aged?

OK, thats it, Founder killed 2 of the 3 remaining, and you just emptied the pot. Great buck, 8 days solo, that's dedication and it paid off in a big way! Kudos to you

I agree with Gator.. I wanna go armed camping if that's the result.. Beautiful buck.. congrats and good luck on the Henries.. Kill a big one.. or should I say bigger one..

I've hunted Region G all of my life and I know you hear this a lot, but anymore that is a true trophy buck for this area. Those are far and few between in Region G. You know you would think sooner or later it has got to get better, but the hunting seems to just be getting worse and worse. I remember when it was once a great trophy area, but now you might get lucky and run onto a 190 class buck, but you aren't going to run onto your 200+ bucks. I would say that I used to see some huge bucks, but it seems like the last 5 or 6 years especially the most of the larger bucks taken are in the 170's if that. There just isn't a very good deer population overall anymore and I'd say the buck to doe ratio is down tremendously. Combine this with the fact that hunter population just keeps seeming to increase and it makes for a tough hunt. On that note, I personally have a few areas in particular I like to hunt, and didn't even really hunt either of my two favorite areas because all I seen was orange. Opening morning I literally seen 30 hunters in one small area. I packed up and moved to my next favorite spot to find basically the same thing. Finally I myself just moved to new turf in order to get away from everybody, and I still ran into hunters everywhere. I don't know what the answer is to this, because I myself love to hunt every year, but I don't like to be camping with everyone else either. I have actually been impressed with some of the deer I have seen coming out of the Southeast side of the state. I didn't know that area for being that great ever, but I've seen five really nice bucks come out of there this year.

Oh well.

Just completed Chapter 2 in the Henry's with a buck that is 24" wide and scores 183 gross (he'll net over 180 as he is very symetrical). I'm still having nightmares over the "one that got away" which was a tall, 32"-33" wide buck with one extra in-line point on his left G2 and would have handily scored over 200. Did I say that I'm having nightmares? I'm ashamed to say that I shot and missed the deer, but definitely killed a branch in front of him. Never would have imagined my day 1 spill would knock my scope out of line but learned the next day that my pea-shooter was hitting 6" low and 2" right at 100 yds. I certainly can't complain though as I ended up with a good buck and had a shot at the dream in the Henry Mountains!

Two GORGEOUS BUCKS!
What a year for you!
Great job!

By the way,
I live in UT.
There are a lot of UTARDS that live here.
I have also seen quite a few WYOMORONS, NEVADUHNS, COLORADORKS, ID-IOTS and AIRHEADZONANS in my travels.

slama,

Great job on two outstanding bucks! No shame in the Henry buck! People think these top units owe us a big animal. Not true, it takes work and a little luck. You did great!

Slam, I feel your pain on missing your chance on the big guy!
Does a cold sweat accompany your nightmares too?

Same Pain here watched my wife stalk within 100yrds of a monster typical that I had watched for over 2 hours before I could find her and then another hour of her stalking in her socks to get that close only to miss the chance in a lifetime

Here is some pictures of the buck she missed
