After six attempts, I finally landed my first elk. I shot a 5x5 in unit 3 in CO. We had a great trip and stayed in Craig. Didn't see tons of elk but did well when we saw them. Brought my rack, ivory and a whole lot of meat. I've never ate elk. Hope I like it. Let me know how he looks.
thanks.

Not bad. Were you with an outfitter tresspass fee or just public?

Bet it was a hard hunt with out any weather.

We did have a guide and it was tough seeing elk at times but 13 out of 15 got elk. Only 4 bulls. It should have been better but we'll take what we got. In the five days I saw 8, 2, 0, ~30 and 3. Everything was miles away until the herd of 30 come by. They got 7 out of that but they were over 1000 yards from me. Next morning had three bulls come by about 200 yards and dropped this one. All previous 5 hunts I never saw elk. Just the way it's been. My luck is so bad it could be raining ##### cats and I'd get hit in the head with a richard... If you know what I mean.

Congratulations.
That's how it is with elk, you don't see any, you don't see any, then all of a sudden there is a whole mess of em.

Good job Cheesehead!! Great bull - still waiting on my first one.

HOOK 'EM!

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

That is awesome cheesehead! Way to stick with it! My first and only bull is a broken up 5 pt but I still get a big grin on my face every time I look up at his antlers displayed up on the wall.

It's because you all are hunting in the wrong state. 6 years to get a bull in CO is pretty good.

Congrats on the bull and shooting elk is no easy task!

Way to go! Everyone I talked to that hunted in Craig this year said the same thing. Nothing, nothing, nothing, ELK!
Way to make your chances count.

Congrats on your first bull. That is awesome. I shot my first this year so I can relate on how awesome the experience was for you.

Thanks guys... I'm still looking at the pictures because it seems surreal. Due to the fact we were leaving the next morning, we took the bull right to the processor. I only had about 1.5 hours to gloat and then it was gone. My hunting buddy of 25 years never got to see it and wasn't with me. That was the sad part.

My buddy and I have both ate elk now and agree. Much better than venison. We had a roast and hamburger. Roast taste like beef but lean, not flavorful fat. Burger was fine. Tonight, it's backstraps on the grill. Marinated them in Italian dressing over night. Hope they turn out good. Wife is even eating it.

Mntman - go ViQueens...Maybe you should ask Traitor Brett to come back. I'm a GBP Shareholder by the way. You know why WI guys don't date MN girls? You ever seen a gopher hole after a Badger's been through it? On Wisconsin!

Oh come on now Horsecrack.... don't show your jealousy in public. Only publicly owned team in the NFL with rich tradition and several Super Bowl Rings. I have a Shareholder's one myself.

By the way, the back straps tasted pretty good but were a little tough. I cooked them to med rare. Any good advise for tenderizing them or better methods to cook them? Hate to cut them up for stew meat.

Not sure why your steaks were a little tough??? I never had to tendorize mine. You cut off all the crap from them, right?

Actually a shareholder definition would mean that you could sell your "shares" when in reality you can't. All you did was donate money to the packers organization that you can't ever get back. Other than the sweat rubbed on you in the bench seats from the 400 pound hot dog eating machine sitting next to you...
Don't be upset that MN chicks won't date guys from WI, its simply a matter of not wanting cheese shoved up there a$$ due to normal WI tradition...;-)

Both elk were butchered within about 3-4 hours of the kill. Maybe that had something to do with it. Not much time to break down the fibers that aging does. Yes, they were trimmed clean. Next time maybe I'll seer them on the grill then crock pot them.

As for my share, I have more than gotten my money's worth with attending shareholder's meetings, meeting people, facility tours of weight and locker rooms. And hey, the cost per year of bragging rights is priceless. I would never want to sell my stock. Good luck to the Vikings and Gophers.

best thing to do is when you thaw them out let them sit in the fridge for a couple days to let it age a bit....

How to start an argument online:
1. Express an opinion
2. Wait

>Shareholder? lol
>packers still suck!

>Traditional >>>------->

Yep, they suck all the way to the division champion again. My guess would be your team must be in the NFC North. I always remind myself when someone gets to upset over the discussions...it's a game. Newtown is upsetting. I pray for them.

I'll try leaving it a few days in the fridge. I did marinate it 24 hours. Thanks again guys for all the nice comments on my first elk.
