Just got home from a great trip to my favorite state of Wyoming. If my pickup didn't now sport a new 700r transmission, i'd have to say the trip was about perfect. My partner and i looked over a lot of bucks, one day we saw 18 between us and a few were in the "i don't want to see that kinda deer" class. Neither of us got a real big buck, my partners buck has a 26" spread and was too good to pass on. My buck came to us at dusk during a white out snow-hale squall. He looked good moving up higher on that sage hillside and after 6 days hunting muleys, with lopes before that, my partner was anxious to "fill out", i took him. Not a trophy rack but respectable in today's Muley hunting world, a very large body, a mature buck, and he is going to be welcome to have this coming winter.
The Antelope hunting was fantastic! I looked over hundreds of bucks before my partner arrived three days after i did. He only had two doe tags to fill but we had a blast arguing over which buck i was to shoot. I took my lope after the fifth day of glassing what must have been several hundred buck goats. We never did see "the one".
I passed on a crooked horn guy that had very deep hooks, decent mass, and nice cutters. Rich said he was sure he'd "book" but i just didn't like the "looks" of him myself. The zone had tons of 12-14", some could have been 15", goats with some nice mass and decent cutters. Picking one out of the gads n gads was fun but difficult for me when really wanting a good one. I ended up taking a 13" goat with 7" bases and not quite 7" prongs. He was the heaviest horned lope we saw and though he won't book, he grosses at or little better than the 80" mark and i love the overall mass on him. To tell the truth, i had no idea he'd score what he did until the meat processor got excited and put a tape to him. I shot him cause he floated my boat... glad i did.
I just can't say enough about the wonderful people of Wyoming. Every single person we came across couldn't have been nicer. Permission to pass through or even hunt was freely given at the asking. We hunted area 87 for deer and 63 for lopes. Most of our time was spent on public grounds. These were limited entry hunts and we got what we expected, not a lot of hunters, some decent game numbers, and a wonderful time. I'd have to say the area is best suited for trophy Elk hunting. I believe tags in this area are hard to come by but we saw some huge animals on the hoof and four being caped out in a outfitters barn, really nice ones! Almost every day we'b bump a good bull or two while hunting muleys.
I had some disposable camera pic's developed on the way home. They came out terrible IMO but once i have a bud e-mail them to me, my scanner is on the blink, i'll post them up such as they are.
