Wyoming Success, er kinda!

Just got home from a great trip to my favorite state of Wyoming. If my pickup didn't now sport a new 700r transmission, i'd have to say the trip was about perfect. My partner and i looked over a lot of bucks, one day we saw 18 between us and a few were in the "i don't want to see that kinda deer" class. Neither of us got a real big buck, my partners buck has a 26" spread and was too good to pass on. My buck came to us at dusk during a white out snow-hale squall. He looked good moving up higher on that sage hillside and after 6 days hunting muleys, with lopes before that, my partner was anxious to "fill out", i took him. Not a trophy rack but respectable in today's Muley hunting world, a very large body, a mature buck, and he is going to be welcome to have this coming winter.

The Antelope hunting was fantastic! I looked over hundreds of bucks before my partner arrived three days after i did. He only had two doe tags to fill but we had a blast arguing over which buck i was to shoot. I took my lope after the fifth day of glassing what must have been several hundred buck goats. We never did see "the one".

I passed on a crooked horn guy that had very deep hooks, decent mass, and nice cutters. Rich said he was sure he'd "book" but i just didn't like the "looks" of him myself. The zone had tons of 12-14", some could have been 15", goats with some nice mass and decent cutters. Picking one out of the gads n gads was fun but difficult for me when really wanting a good one. I ended up taking a 13" goat with 7" bases and not quite 7" prongs. He was the heaviest horned lope we saw and though he won't book, he grosses at or little better than the 80" mark and i love the overall mass on him. To tell the truth, i had no idea he'd score what he did until the meat processor got excited and put a tape to him. I shot him cause he floated my boat... glad i did.

I just can't say enough about the wonderful people of Wyoming. Every single person we came across couldn't have been nicer. Permission to pass through or even hunt was freely given at the asking. We hunted area 87 for deer and 63 for lopes. Most of our time was spent on public grounds. These were limited entry hunts and we got what we expected, not a lot of hunters, some decent game numbers, and a wonderful time. I'd have to say the area is best suited for trophy Elk hunting. I believe tags in this area are hard to come by but we saw some huge animals on the hoof and four being caped out in a outfitters barn, really nice ones! Almost every day we'b bump a good bull or two while hunting muleys.

I had some disposable camera pic's developed on the way home. They came out terrible IMO but once i have a bud e-mail them to me, my scanner is on the blink, i'll post them up such as they are.

Great story Joey. Can't wait to see the pics regardless of their quality. Although I do have to say where's the digital camera? Did you forget it or lose it?

Congratulations on the hunts. Sounds like you had a lot of fun.

Alp, digital camera? What's that?? lol

My partner is a great guy and the best hunting partner ever!...but he sure can't take a pic fer krap! :)

It'll be tomorrow guys. i got to get back to unpacking!

Thanks! Joey

Joey, I thought you got lost, or found a job back there. j/k

Sounds like you had a blast Joey. Lots of animals, wild weather, good company and a sucessful hunt. Doesn't get much better than that. Thanks for posting. Dean

Great story and congrats to you both. Sorry about truck problems. Hoping to get to do what you did in next few years!!

Sounds like you had a great hunt! Most of us treat the out of staters well.

"I shot him cause he floated my boat... "

That is a bigger factor for me than height, width, etc. Of course I couldn't accurately field score for love nor money...

Congrats Joey and also for youor partner.....post up the awefull pictures anyway so we can get some idea what you got there. Love WYO too, we filled 5 out of 6 tags.

Brian

Hey Joey,
Sounds like you had fun, thought I'd post let you know I'm around. I haven't been posting much.
I too got a 4x4 this year, small maybe 140ish only buck I saw and the pics came out terrible.

A conclusion is the place where you got tired of thinking.

Here's some pic's. This first one was the first day we actually hunted lopes. There wasn't much snow but it was foggy and COLD!! The fog proved to be an issue several times during the hunt. We were in no real hurry though so enjoyed whatever came our way.

This day of hunting started out with a bad fog so we cooked up some game hens and hung around the fire until the fog got blown away and i later took my buck at the start of a new cold front.

Here's both our bucks. Rich's taped out nicer, my buck was much bigger bodied, had huge feet, and was older.

I have some other, of the lope and buck, better photos but they need sizing. Joey

Great report Sage!! I realy like the fire side picture, sometimes we forget its suppose to be fun and we put un needed pressure on ourselfs. Thanx for the reality check! Hey Sage did you know there were several Chester hunters around the same area on combo hunts, my 13 year old son and I played hookey from school and work and worked over the doe antelope and one small muley. Yes Wyoming is an Awesome place! BH1

Nice Job Sage,

Great bucks all the way around. Next time you better take me, I have the cameras and can take great photo's!!! J/K! Thanks for sharing!

LAST EDITED ON Oct-26-09 AT 00:00AM (MST)[p]Thanks Guys!

Dog, What, you don't like my good camera. This was the $12. model with the flash. Good thing i didn't take the cheap one :)

BH1, We were kinda bumbed with the fog until i suggested we might as well cook up those game hens. My bud said that was the best idea i'd had the whole trip. Like some here, he cuts me no slack either.lol

Chester guys? No i didn't have that info. We did run into 3 guys that had filled out early with young 4x4's. They were from Red Bluff, Ca.
Small world.

I want to mention the great processing plant that we used. It's located on the south side of the freeway frontage road, a couple miles East of Rawlins. Apparently, they had sold out some years ago but were freshly back in business. A very clean shop run efficiently by a really nice bunch of people. I really liked how they boned out all our game animals as a matter of standard practice. No bone chips or marrow in/on the meat. They were reasonable in price, stored my lope head for free, and gave us free of charge, enough dry ice to get our packages of processed meat home still frozen.

Trails West Taxidermy is the building right next door, Tom gave me a nice tour of some incredible animals in his shop. He's still hunting a big buck for a special multi unit late hunt tag that he has...Hope he gets one!!

Like to also send out my thanks and appreciation to the gang in the shop at Covelo's Napa parts, service, and Farm store in the Bridger Valley area East of Evanston Wy. Ron, the service manager runs a tight efficient shop, nobody there working any harder, and he just went way over the top to welcome, help, or advise me anyway he could. Robert and Matt, their two journeyman mechanics, plus a few helper guys, did a stand up job on replacing my transmission and getting me back on the way home. I'd highly recommend anyone to use this business. Well run by qualified and very nice people and though not cheap, i would not have been able to get all the work done that i did, IMO, any quicker, better, or for less money, anywhere near here in Kali.

Also James and Tiffany, a ranch couple that were standing in for, absent due to illness, ranch owners we sought out for permission to hunt. We visited with them several times and always went away laughing, a delightful couple making due by hard work and honest living in tough times with 7 kids on a ranch hands salary. I'll miss those guys!!

Joey

Sounds like you had a great time in Wyoming Joey, glad you got back all in one piece. I am heading out to Colorado on Friday....hope I shoot better than I did in Nevada.

PS--The browns are biting big time right now.

Sage, Looks like a great trip. Except for the transmission. I've bought a couple of those myself, so I feel your pain. Which rifle and load did you end up using? Congrats, mtmuley

Nice job, sage!--
I'm glad you had a good time in Wyo!
Hope to catch up with y'all next time you hunt here!!

Rump

Thanks again guys!

Muley, i took my 270WSM with 140gr Accubond Winchester supreme ammo. Proved to be decent shooting stuff in my gun and they performed excellent. Both animals that i took were just over 200 yds away. Chip shots this year but it's nice to be prepared for those middling to kinda on the far side shots that seem to be more the normal for me lately here in the last 5-6 years or so.

Larrbo, Good to hear from you bud!! The gun is cleaned, oiled , and put away. Time to break out the fishing gear!! :)

Here's a couple more pic's of my animals

Good to see you did well.

Glad you had a great trip other wise.

if you and overton ever hook up you'll each know to carry a spare tranny.
nice job sage, even if it did cost you a tranny!
you can drive em forever but it seems like when you'd least wanna have it happen it happens.
oh well,it just bumps the price of the jerky up a little.

:) :) :) :) Pretty funny stuff guys. There must be some history there that i'm not aware of but i got to believe that an extra tranny is not going to be on my next years list of things to be sure an pack. I do carry an extra fan belt though...but that's another tale of another hunt.

Never_Catch, you're 100% right! I still get out and hunt as much as most but have slowed down some but mostly on the out of state trips. That plus getting to go on another trip with my old pard really had me looking forward to this trip. The area takes points but we had and used them. With the help of MM's drawing odds feature, i felt pretty sure that we were going from the day i sent in my money. Though this might well be the smallest buck i've ever taken on a trip like this, i like and am happy with him and the nice lope was pure icing on the cake.

Gator, sure bud, just hop in and we'll go! Not sure that i could pull your trailer though...might be hard on my new shiny blue tranny :)

Joey

Joey, congrats to you and your pard. Wyoming was lucky to host you guys!

overton's tranny problems come from using salt water as a lubricant.(he drives it from Kali. to Kona every year).

Ah, Gee wizz there Eel, that sure cleared everything up for me :)

Nice of you to say but i feel that we are lucky to go there. As you know, it's a really nice little mountain area where i live and there are a lot of really nice people that live up here too but in Wy, at least the parts i've visited, it seems to me to have a even larger % of really nice down to earth people. Every time i've gone there i kinda feel blessed to have visited and met some of their people.

Another shout out to Mark Carrico at Bi-Rite Sporting Goods in Rawlins. I was there waiting for him to open the mourning after arriving in Wy. Mark didn't tell me were to set up camp but he had some ideas that he shared and one of them indirectly pointed us to our deer hunting area. His store is about as well stocked as you'll ever find these days, they even had LR primers, and they were a great place to get my sm game, fishing lic, and Conservation stamp. I even got a brick of 22lr ammo for near $20. which is a deal nowadays. Thanks!!

...and Glade Erickson provided a super nice tow service that though i would have preferred to have avoided, was there with his new truck when needed and gave me a fair price for his services rendered.

Joey

Joey. we just need to go before your 1 yr warranty is up on that new blue shiney tranny. That 3 horse slant isn't that heavy. LOL.
Glad you guys had a great time hunting.

Joey congrats on your hunt, looks like you had a great time - the truck problems. Just got home from NM last night, wish I could post a picture but it's tag soup for me. Had fun though.

Sage looks like you had a great time even though the pics were a little foggy! Sorry to hear about your tranny though but if you have to have a bad experience with a tranny you at least picked the one that doesn't have emotional baggage! :) You guys got some nice animals in spite of the difficulty's with your truck and still kept your focus and had fun and that's what it's all about. Most young guys would have been so pissed they'd have packed up and come home but that's what experience will do for you! Congrats to you and your bud! CA
