257 Weatherby Mag

Wondering how many of you guys use the 257 Weatherby for deer? I have a .300 win mag that I hunt everything with but have had a bug for the weatherby for awhile now. I reload so ammo wouldn't be an issue. What are the pro's and cons of the cartridge?

The .257 Weatherby is one of the fastest (flattest) shooting deer sized cartridges around. I know of a couple of guys that use them regularly for elk (not recommended by me) and they have never had any trouble killing them. They are like a bolt of lightening when the bullet hits a deer. If you reload, I would recommend using Lee's collet dies. They work great for high pressure bolt guns and they'll help to preserve your case life. I would also recommend using a well built bullet. Higher velocities can sometimes result in rapid expansion on lightly constructed bullets.

I've taken deer, elk, antelope and a goat with mine and I love it. I would not recommend shooting anything within 100 yards though, very devastating. Weatherbys all the way.

It is an awesome caliber. I'd hunt Elk/moose with mine, but I don't (I use my .340 WBY). It is a bang/flop cartridge. By far my favorite caliber. But, like one of the post said be careful within a hundred yards. I've gone to using the solid barns x-bullets, because the partition was too damaging. The speed in incredible. I think the .257 would make a great mule deer rifle. If you get one and use it, post your thoughts on it later.
Good luck.

Me too. I love the feel of the Weatherbys so I bought multiple calibers..........before I got married.

I have used one for 6-7 years now and love it. Deadly on deer/antelope. Havent used (and wont) on elk but for long range shooting it is the best caliber I have ever used........... Thanks, Allen Taylor......

I used mine for deer and antelope. No complaints. It works very well. The .257 Weatherby rocks in the fact it's not all that bad in the recoil department as magnums go, and it shoots very flat. I have a 30" barrel and I'm getting 3850 fps with 100gr Nosler BT handloads. Compute those numbers in your head for a minute and you'll see why I love this rifle. I call it my "point and shoot" rifle. Just point at what you want to kill out to 400 yards. Hold on hair, then kill it.

i just bought one a month ago in the ultra light. I cant wait to shoot a deer with it. I am just not sure what bullet and weight i want to shoot. cause i want that lightning bolt effect but i want a good bullet. thoughts?

LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-07 AT 09:09AM (MST)[p]If you are looking for a really beautiful gun - the Sportsman's Warehouse in Round Rock, Texas (not that bad of a drive either - only 24 hours from here to Mapleton ;-) ) has the most beautiul .257 Weatherby Mag I have ever seen. It is the prettiest gun in the whole store. Your Sportsman's probably has one pretty comparable though. Ditto to what everyone else has said. The ballistics blow just about everything else out of the water. If you like it in the store - you will love it in the field.

Thanks guys. I have decided on either the Mark V ultralight or the accumark. I really want the lightwieght gun but don't really care for the looks. I love the accumark so I'm kind of in a bind. I am intrigued by the barnes x 100 grain at 3700fps. Anyone shoot that load and how does it group.

I like what I have seen from the Barnes bullets, but despite their video claims, I have talked with a couple of hunters who have recovered Barnes bullets from kills that didn't mushroom at all. The one shot hit the deer just behind the rib cage and travelled up into the chest. It didn't hit any bones or muscle mass and was pretty much still intact. On the other hand, I have heard a lot of hunters back up the claims made on the video. The local director for the RMEF down here in Austin swears by them. He has killed 7 deer with 7 bullets - has loaded one box of shells in the last 4 years with the Barnes X and doesn't expect to have to reload for another two years, depending on the number of hunts he goes on.
