Myself and a friend got tags and an outfitter to horseback us into a drop camp at 11,000ft.for the first deer hunt. Since we live in the east we are reeeally new to mule deer hunting and could sure use a little advice from anyone who's been there and done that. Is that area worth the $ for the OTC elk tag ?

I haven't hunted the unit but I checked the 2nd season elk (first season deer) harvest success rates for the unit for you. 2004 - 15%, 2005 - 13%, 2006 - 16%. Being packed into a drop camp could improve your chances some. I guess it depends on you whether or not you want the tag with these #s in mind. As a resident, I would do it because its inexpensive. As a non-resident, I would really be questioning the purchase of that tag.

Thanks, I'm not sure how those % compare with the rest of the state .. We are interested more in the deer hunting and will have 6 days to figure it out. I would hate not to have the elk tag in my pocket and a nice bull show up,so I'll probably buy it when we get out there. Any idea as to the deer #'s and quality I should expect ? I really didn't see anybody saying anything about this unit on MM.
