non resident wyoming units

Going into 2013 with four points and wanting to know of any good units to potentially kill a 330+ bull. I have horses and want to go non-guided.

Don't shoot for the moon, skip right past it and head for the stars, uh. 330+ bull sounds big for a unit below max points but I never hunted WY so I might be wrong.

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

I'd look at unit 38 up in the BigHorns as you might be able to draw that with your 4PPs and have a good hunt if you have access to horses.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-01-12 AT 03:31PM (MST)[p]38 for sure. I spend time up there and see elk all the time. If I were you and most locals would agree that you have a better chance at a good bull with the archery tag than rifle. I was deer hunting up there in the opener this year and the rifle hunt which is the same day for deer and elk is a freaking ZOO. Tons of guys everywhere. Plus once the lead starts flying those elk are gone baby gone!!!! Gorgeous country tho!

I agree with you 100% Stu and should have said that in my post. If you are into archery, by all means do as many days as you can during the September hunt. Then if you don't fill the tag on that hunt and can swing a second trip, you can go back for the later rifle hunt.

Hey TG, are you sure that you could come back? My buddy had the 38 archery tag this year and we saw some elk on the opener and he said he couldn't shoot because the tag he had was a special draw and was for archery only??????

38, 39, 40 are type 9 archery only, no archery for a type 1 tag holder.

Archery seasons if you have a Type 1 tag:

just remember you cant hunt wilderness areas if you go D-I-Y

"getting real sick of that chevy ad in the elk forum"

I stand corrected, as I keep forgetting that several of those units, including 38, exclude the Type 1 tags from archery hunting during September! He probably couldn't draw the archery tag with 4PPs either.

Area 38 bow is ok but there are 400 bull tags, 400 cow tags and deer season all start on the same day in rifle season in 38. Outfitters ,ATV's side by sides, horses, roads everywhere ...it's like going to work on monday morning..... A zoo for sure !!

I talked to a guy here in Idaho that hunted 61 last year and seen some good bulls, but said there were alot of griz in the area. Does anyone have any info on that area?

Even the best units can't guarantee a 330 bull...there's a big difference between 330 bulls there and being able to harvest one.

61 is a good unit also. It is a tough unit. Best areas are accessed from out side Meetetse and it is mostly all private. The type 1 tag is good. The type 2 tag is great, limited tag numbers and depending on the weather the big bulls are flooding out of the high country. A 330 bull in this area is very realistic with the possibility of something much bigger. There are Gizzley's and wolves there.

Unit 7 is very good as well. No Bears or wolves. A good unit if you have horses as well.

I don't know the points needed but with 4 you probably have a decent chance.

I hunted 61 this year. The survey the govt. does says the drainage which is 61 contains 83 grizzly bears. I think I saw everyone of them. We saw some nice elk and most times we tried to get closer we ran into a grizzly. We saw at least 2 bears everyday and they eat your elk if you don't get it out right away.(Ask ChubbyTuna) I was stalked by one for over a mile as my guide watched from on top the mountain and freaked out. It ended up being a standoff at 30'but I didn't want to shoot the grizz because of Fed problems. I came out ok. If you think this isn't true contact Bob Sundeen Trails West Outfitters his guide witnessed the whole thing.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-12 AT 02:57PM (MST)[p]Also two 61 units. I think one is type 1 and one is type 2. The one is totally Washakie Wilderness real rough terrain and the other is mostly private. Topgun will know which is which, he's a much better reference than most on here.

LAST EDITED ON Dec-03-12 AT 05:38PM (MST)[p]61-1 had 150 either sex elk tags issued for 10/1-10/31 for the Wilderness area and the tag was also good in unit 62 in the Wilderness area south of Avalanche Creek. 61-2 had 50 either sex tags issued for 10/15-11/15 and they were good for all of unit 61.
If there are that many bears in just one drainage, you know damn well the total number in the entire ecosystem is many times more than what officials say there are. Thus, they should be delisted and hunted just like the wolves before they start doing more than just stalking people like happened on his hunt.

If you would have shot an elk and left it for him he would have quit stalking you and the two of you would be best friends now:) He was just waiting for ths shots to be fired so he knew where his next meal was coming from. That is what they have learned to do now. I speak from experience as well.

After giving me he'll the bear went over and ate part of Chubbytuna's elk and drug it up the basin. He left my elk alone and went for the big one. Sundeen says the thought is that grizzlies will be delisted and a small number of tags issued in 2014. I have my doubts about that but I could be wrong.

The difference between unit 61 Type 1 and 61 Type 2 is the seasons. Type 1 is the earlier season, more tags and easier to draw. Type 2 is late season, less tags, harder to draw and largly considered the better season for that area, as the snows push all the elk from the high country and they migrate to the lower areas of 61. I have hunted the late season in 61 twice and have shot big bulls both times and always see lots of big e
