Seems to be the premium tag in the state for a big bull. A freinds of my dads has 20 elk points. Cool older guy about 60....funny as hell and has more good hunting stories that I have ever heard. He has been a guide....cowboy....and just about evertyhing else.

He is looking for one last nice bull to hang his tag on. He told me that his best ever was a 332 NM bull and would love to get one bigger. He is in pretty good to fair shape and a great shot. So was kind of wondering with the changing dynamics of the elk herds what was the best option. With 20 points I am pretty sure he draw anything.....

Thanks for any thoguths or info

Ted

LAST EDITED ON Dec-14-12 AT 04:35PM (MST)[p]Well I looked. With 20 point he would not have drawn this year assuming he is a NR. Everything I looked at was 20 point except for archery in 2 was 17. He is close, but point creep is still happening.

I how ever will say that of the 2 units and having spent time in both units it is a toss up. Both have decent access, neither is extremely rough terrain, there are areas, but it is not continuous. Good road access, etc. In 2 there is a little more concern about property lines and private... If I had the choice I would go with 201... Either would be awesome. I had a buddy whose dad, uncle and cousin all drew unit 10 they all 3 got nice bulls, and missed opportunities on bigger bulls. They are all 330ish bulls with a few seen in the 350ish range.

If he is a resident then he might draw, but I bet he might still be a year or 2 out on the NR odds...

Whhooops he is a Colorado resident....

I think that anything 330 plus would have him whooping fgor joy...a 350 bull would have him whooping even louder....

Based on last year then 2 is a go as it only took 18 for Resident. 201 on the other hand was at 20 last year so it maybe a toss up. So that should make things a little better...

If he is a NR he may never draw either one. I had 20 going into last year and figuring there were around 35 guys ahead of me with 21 PP it would be 7 years before the points creep would even get into my zone. I turned 60 in SEP. I decided to do an archery hunt in Unit 2. Did not want to wait till I was 70 to hunt the NW corner of CO. If he is a resident thats a different case but I still think it is pretty high and not sure 20 will get it done.

I have similar points and am hearing 40,61 and 76 is producing in a lot of cases the same or better caliber bulls. than the other units. I think I may go that route and hunt before they change something else.

Do a web image search and it looks like 350 is pretty common. Don't take much of the advice on the internet as 99.9999% of the people responding have never stepped foot in the unit.

Lots of very nice bulls in Unit 2 and 330+ is very possible. I spent 15 days in it this past archery season and saw mine and two other bulls taken during the season. One 360 one 344 and one 377. And this was in the archery season. I am sure many of similar size were taken during the gun season. I also saw a pic of a 360 that was taken in 201 during the archery season on a guided hunt. You are pretty much hunting the same elk in both units. Public land and areas to hunt elk in 201 is more limited wherein 201 is a very large Unit.
