youth cow hunt success

With a Wasatch Front cow tag.
This tag can be one of the hardest hunts you can go on. Steep terrain, deep snow, limited access, and you really put in the miles. I've actually hunted it with a bow for 10 years and haven't ever punched a tag up there. We did a few scouting trips and kept coming up empty handed. We finally figured the elk were in a canyon with limited access. So we made a call to her uncle to see if we could get the mules. It was a no go. He had things already planned for this weekend. So if it was going to happen it was going to happen on foot. We hit the trail at 5:00 am and hiked about 8.5 miles before we finally punched her first big game tag. The shot was about a hundred yards and she took out the lead cow with a perfect double lung shot with her .243. We took a few photos quartered it up and hiked out in the dark. I have never been so tired! The work wasn't over yet though we still had to come back in the morning to pack it out. I made a few phone calls and rounded up a few guys "Gary Wilson and my brother" who were more then willing to help out. We hit the trail at around 10 am this morning and didn't get to the truck until about 4:30 in the afternoon. In two days of hunting and packing she put in 10+ miles in some very tough terrain for an adult let alone a kid. She actually wanted to keep some of its hide for a blanket for her barbie dolls lol.
Here are a few photos.

a few more photos from this years deer hunt. I only had two days to hunt with her because of work so we couldn't hunt the deer we scouted up. We had to hunt a different area and it seemed everyone that drew our tag also hunted that area. I've never seen it so crowded. She put in the miles scouting as well on one of our trips we scouted up on buck in the mid 180's low 190's. She said I couldn't hunt it because it was hers. It was in a spot I could have hunted it with very little pressure but if I killed it she would have never let me live it down.

At first light we had a chance at several bucks. However its hard for a kid to compete with guys packing cannons and shooting close to a 1000 yards. In fact we were within a hundred yards of a very small 4 point and someone dropped it. We never even saw him shoot but we could tell from the report of his gun it was going to take him a half a day to get to the buck. After about 20 minutes of shooting we were left with sloppy 2nds and then sloppy 3rds. It was a spike by two at 440 yards. I know that is a long shot for a kid with a small gun but she isn't the average kid when it comes to shooting. So I let he take a few shots. I watched through the spotting scope and could tell where every bullet hit and they landed a foot high or a foot low. I finally told her to stop and see if we could get any closer. As we climbed closer the buck decided he had had enough and left.

On opening day I was surprised that we had put in close to 9 miles of hiking. we hiked from sun up to sun down. The next day I woke up to stiff muscles and low mental outlook because of what I saw on opening day. She woke up fresh and ready to go get herself a buck. So we hike anther 3 miles that morning and I finally had to call it quits because I had to catch a plane out of town for work.

A broken hand didn't even slow her down

Our camp only had kids with deer tags and they were all pretty dedicated hunters.

The goats allow me to take a kid further into the back country and still retrieve the deer. There not a fast pack animal but it beats carrying all the extra crap on my back.

Great job dad, and a great hunt and elk for her! If she wears them, you should have those ivories made into a pair of earrings. Basic ones aren't too expensive.

She wanted to make ring out of them. She has her own money so she can do what she wants. Do you know someone who does that sort of stuff?

I bought my wife's wedding ring from a guy here in Ogden. He has been doing custom rings for a million years. If you are interested I'll shoot you a PM with his info.

Buckmaster,
That is a great story! Congrats to her and good job for raising her right. I love that she wanted to save some hide for her barbie! Being a dad of girls it gives me something to look forward to. As for the ring, I have a buddy here in Salt Lake who is a jeweler and makes a lot of ivory stuff. P.M. me if you want his info. I had him make me a ring for my wife for our anniversary out of the bull i killed last year.

Thanks for sharing! You have it made! I can only hope that one of my three kids likes to hunt as much as me. With the oldest being 8 and the youngest being 2, I have some time to "hook" them into hunting. Congrats to you daughter. I hunt the front a ton and I know how hard it is to hunt as well as pack out an animal from that steep, brushy hell hole of a mountain. If that terrain didn't drive her away from the sport, nothing will!

I picked up a cabelas 1/2 horse meat grinder a few days ago and lindsay and i have been making burger. If anyone cares the grinder works awesome. I would recommend it. We used baccon for fat. 10% baccon 90% meat and froze it in vaccume bags.

WOW great story, she is already an awesome hunter good job. That grinder ever get plugged up while using it? Can you keep feeding meat into it without it clogging up? My grinder that i used for 5 years died on me grinding my deer in october. It wasnt a cabelas grinder, I bought it in 07 for 40$ at walmart. I didnt expect it to last as long as it did, to many plastic parts. I have been trying to decide on 1/2 or 1 horse cabelas brand.

I have liked using boneless country style ribs (pork) 3 to 1 with Elk. Never had a complaint. Haven't tried bacon. Thanks for the idea.
