The Western Hunter....new show

Wondering if any of you guys saw the first episode last night? Hatfield and the crew hit it on the nail on this one, IMHO. No wasted airport or target shooting video. A lot of elk country footage, and very hard work paying off in rugged country. Not a lot of wasted dialogue either...perfect. And no hooping and hollering in the wilderness (before OR after the elk was down)...once again, perfect.

Congrats Ryan, Nate, Chris and your crew. This was the best hunting show I've seen in a long time. You've done the public land elk hunting world a big favor.

Doug

I really liked the first episode. It was real hunting, unlike so much of what is on TV these days. I hope the rest of the season is as good as the first episode was.

BMO-looks like this was on 6pm MST Wed. (DirectTV) on "SPMN" which is the Sportsman's Channel I suppose. I don't see another scheduled today but will check on tomorrow and later.

Does that mean you guys don't like Fred Eichler's littler girl screams and ants in his pants dances after he center punches a spike buck???

I thought that is why everyone watches huntin shows!

LAST EDITED ON Jan-03-13 AT 04:50PM (MST)[p]It shows it airs again Friday at 7:00am I believe on channel 605 on Direct TV if you missed it.
Ryan,Nate, Chris and all are doing an excellent job and I appreciate the hard work they have been putting in to share with us.
Many shows may be lacking but this definitely is not one to miss.
Best,
Jerry

Enjoyed that show. Kept expecting them to drag some nitwit hottie with hoop ear rings in for a kill. Glad they didn't sell out like some of these other crap hunting programs. We could also do with less Fred Eichler and that other clown on western extreme. Anyone subscribe to either of those mag's they were pimping. I'm interested, although they seemed a bit pricey for just a few issues per year...

I assume The Western Hunter television show is affiliated with Western Hunter magazine? The same bunch of people who supported the AZ SFW tag grab attempt about this time last year?

yeppers, one and the same.

I really like Nate Simmons but I won't give Denham a dime.

Great show. I was just a little disappointed they didn't show the badging of every piece of gear they were using:)

there is nothing worse than wasted timeon a hunting show. i was watching fred eichler last night and he was branding a young bull, then giving it an injection for something, then castrating it and showing the jewels to the camera. why? i enjoy watching him shoot coyotes(or anyone for that matter, not necessarily him) and really am not interested in him doing his farm chores. he also unloaded a semi full of hay. now that is some quality predator hunting and an episode i will not soon forget. i will try to, but i will always remember what a waste of my time it was.

I enjoyed the show very much. I really liked the part near the end of the show when they started talking about how they wanted to do it themselves and not be "Led around by the hand". The other show that I also like is On Your Own Adventures. Same deal, no $10,000 dollar guides or $100,000 tags. Just guys doing their homework and making the best out of what they put into the hunt.
I actually get the Elk Hunter Magazine and really do like what they have behind the cover. Good stories, informational backcountry tips and gear reviews. I really enjoy that they include meat processing-step by step explanations also. You don't see the field care information in any other magazines as far as I know. Everyone is focused on the kill, equipment and their own take on the same information that everyone else is printing.
WELL DONE!

Well, if they produce a good TV show, maybe we can give them a pass. But anyone else that tries to steal our tags can go pound sand! ;-)

I especially like the stupid jokes while they're driving the company truck in many of these shows, and the loud obnoxious acid rock tunes while they're appearing to be hunting. Then there are the AgelessMale ads every 5 minutes, and Australian stone cooking pans. Priceless.

If it's not set so I can use the FF button, I can't even get through 30 min.

Oak - I appreciate your concern for my unit 10 archery tag I'm gonna draw this year! Thank goodness real sportsmen got the 'tag-grab' stopped before it got out of hand............

If you've ever visited with Ryan Hatfield or Nate Simmons, you'd understand their stance on this public-land, DIY, way-of-life that many of us cherish. No way you could ever knowingly try and throw them under the SFW short bus.

I read and followed all the forums last year concerning the AZ tag-grab. I watched the AZGF meetings on the net. I tried to inform myself the best I could. I even sought out Chris Denham at the Expo last year (first time I've ever been and I never spent a dime on a tag raffle - my way of politely hating the conservation tag and system!). I asked him what really happened and his involvement. I got his side of the story and he answered every 'tough' question I asked. I was satisfied with his answers and can now understand where he was coming from. First time I'd ever met him.

What I found the most ironic in my conversation with him is that I was only the 2nd person that even tried to visit with him about it. He posted his personal email and cell phone on this site and a couple others where he was taking a beating. Told anyone with any questions to call or email. ZERO, ZILCH, NADA took him up on his offer. The other fellow that questioned him was mostly supportive of the AZ attempt....................

Keep fighting the fight. Keep doing all you do to preserve this lifestyle that many of us love and cherish. Keep protecting the wild places for future generations. Maybe more importantly, let's get our facts straight (from the source if they're so inclined!) and not just lump everyone together.
Shoot me an email or give me a call if there's something that I'm just not seeing. I can even make a few calls and get all their #'s and emails if you'd like to ask them any tough questions.

- Now back to the original post! These guys are the real deal and will 'Walk the Talk'. Show is going to be a breath of fresh air not only to Western Hunters who can relate, but to all those that can only dream about the big country we experience every season. This show will do wonders to help educate and inform 'flat-landers' about the 'Big Picture' struggles we as Western Hunters are facing. I also subscribe to both magazines - only ones I subscribe to.

So far Western Hunter and Elk Hunter seem to be one of the best hunting magazines out there.
I know it may seem two faced to like them to some but as long as I do not see them turn into magazines like "Hunting Illustrated" for example I will support them.
As long as guys like Ryan and many others on the staff are running the helm I think they are headed in the right direction in my opionion.
I judge my decision based on the merit of the ones producing the content and so far they have not let me down.
My opinion.
Jerry

Great show and great magazines! Keep it up guys.

I'm with others here. Can't stand most hunting shows anymore. The only ones I really watch anymore are "On Your Own Adventures", "Jim Shockey's The Professionals", "Outlanders", once in a while an "Eastman's" episode and now this show for sure.

Cade,

I respect your opinion on the subject. I have visited with Ryan...just today, in fact. I agree with your assessment that both Ryan and Nate are first class guys that are trying to promote the sport the right way. I have heard nothing damning about either guy.

Where our opinions probably differ is who is ultimately profiting from the message of the "common man" that is being delivered.

Floyd Green was a board member of AZSFW last year when they tried to get HB 2072 passed. He made financial donations to Rep. Weiers and tried hard to get the legislation passed. Mr. Green stood to profit handsomely from this legislation, which would have taken 100?s of tags out of the drawing, and which would have made a vast majority of the ?premium? tags available to those who bid the highest. Luckily, Mr. Green and his partners were defeated in this attempt.

Floyd Green also owns Outdoorsman's, Western Hunter magazine, Elk Hunter magazine, Wilderness Athlete, and The Western Hunter television show. I find it highly ironic that Mr. Green is now trying to profit by selling the message of the ?common man,? when he tried so hard to throw those same hunters under the bus a year ago for his own profit. For that reason, I choose to not support his businesses. That is my opinion?.your opinion may vary.

I have nothing against Ryan, Nate, or the other good guys I know who are associated with the magazines and television show. But I can't and won't knowingly support Floyd Green.

I did take a look at the Hunt Forever West website and noticed that your sponsors include Elk Hunter magazine, Western Hunter magazine, Outdoorsman's, and Wilderness Athlete. I understand your loyalty to the brand.

Sounds good and I understand completely. It seems like a pretty fine line that we walk as hunters/conservationists. Thankfully, some people are as passionate about their hunting heritage as they are.

We all have our personal boundaries that we won't cross. Sounds like yours is with Mr. Green. I can see the good that is coming from having folks like Ryan, Nate and others associated with the magazine and the show. I have no idea what the magazine and show will become, but I sure know what it will never be with them involved. If it puts a few more bucks in Floyd's pocket, I'm willing to sacrifice that to have people like Ryan and Nate out there promoting and defending the 'common man' like you and I. If not them, who else is going to do it for us?? I'm certainly not in a position to do as much good for the 'common man' as they are. Are you?
Why fall on the sword and try to throw them under the bus when they have the BEST opportunity to educate and perpetuate what we love? To discredit Floyd Green? Seems mighty inconsequential to me.

I dislike Uncle Ted. He's been caught poaching on numerous occasions. Am I going to throw him under the bus every time he opens his mouth to defend our 2nd Amendment rights?

I don't drink alcohol. Am I going boycott Pheasants Forever or Elk Foundation projects because they have 'Beer Companies' as sponsors?

Am I going to discredit EVERYTHING that FNAWS, MDF or Rocky Mountain Bighorn Society says or does because they raffle and auction tags that I will never draw?

How bout the NRA? You agree with EVERYTHING they're pushing and want to legislate? I don't, but I will support them on the issues near and dear to me and keep my mouth shut the rest the time - because they're doing more good than harm. Not because they're perfect.

What would the RMBS do if Floyd Green walked into the Banquet and started bidding on a Colorado Sheep tag? Turn down his money and send him packing or take his money and put it into the ground for the best possible return on investment they could get? I think we both know the answer to that one............

Not trying to cause a stir or debate where your morals lie, I just think we should think about 'Cutting off our nose (Ryan, Nate, WH, EH, WHTV) to spite our face (Floyd). Right now they're the best spokesmen we have fighting for this wonderful way of life!

I won't make it to ISE in Denver in 2 weeks. Will you make it to EXPO in SLC? You can join me in not buying any raffle tickets! I'd love to sit down with you to see what solutions are available to help the common man get our message out there to more of the masses.

Thanks,
Cade

I am not throwing anyone under the bus except Floyd Green. I said that I personally wouldn't support him due the the HB 2072 fiasco last year. Ryan and I had a private conversation today about the subject and agreed to disagree. I didn't come on here preaching my opinion until you called me out. I already said that I have no problem with Ryan, Nate, or anyone else involved with the show. I'm guessing you have causes that you are not willing to support due to your beliefs? If so, I guess you and I just choose to draw our lines in the sand at different points.

Regarding the conservation organizations you listed above: they have elected boards of directors that make the decisions. I certainly hope they are not making their decisions based on the opinion of a single person. And yes, I will still choose to support them or not support them based on the decisions they make. I used to be a member of MDF, but I let my membership expire when they became involved with the SLC expo and chose to waste money on predator control. I still support organizations who I believe are doing a good job of promoting their missions, including RMEF, WSF and RMBS. And I would hope that everyone would gather their own information and make their own informed decisions about what they choose to support or not support, based on what they believe, and not what they read from you or I on an internet forum.

I'm not willing to give Floyd Green a pass simply because he is funding a television show that promotes hunting. My personal belief is that it would be asinine for me to support someone who just recently tried to take so much away from us. Why would I? So that maybe he can come back stronger and better funded next time? And I seriously doubt that the opinion of one single "little guy" like myself is going to make a bit of difference in the success or failure of his ventures.

I'm not on here bagging on you for your personal beliefs. No need to bag on me for mine.

Definitely one of the best hunting shows I have seen in a long time. I especially loved the Teddy Roosevelt quote that they used. If you haven't seen the show this will encourage you to watch it. They definitely promote the philosphies and ideals about hunting that I believe in which is no guides, no hand holding, no high dollar ranch hunts only man vs. mountain. At the same rate kudos to them for having the money and more importantly the time to go on week long + hunts in the back country multiple times per year. I think that guides play a valuable role for the hunter who may only get away once per year for a hunt and does not have time to pre season scout and does not own horses and is unfamiliar with the unit. In a perfect world we could all hunt the way these guys hunt.

I watched the first two episodes last night and enjoyed them both. I especially appreciated the reverence and respect they give to the country and the animals they pursued. It does not seem to be just about the kill or the score to them.
Definitely a breath of fresh air. As long as the shows continue as these episodes did, I will routinely record the whole series.

Saw the second episode and thought it was great. Awesome videography and great hunting television. Definitely a breathe of fresh air compared to some of the other shows on TV.
