I now as a non res i have enough points to get drawn in either on of these 2 units. I am not much of a guide person, only been on one fully guided hunt in my life and that was for moose in Canada. I have put in my time to draw and want to kill a good bull with my bow in AZ.If u guys could point my in the right direction with the best guys out there that would be great. I figure my chances have to be alot better with on of these top end guys to find the bull i have been waiting on my whole life. I have shot alot of nice bulls but i want a chance at a 360 type bull or better and the way i see it this may be my best shot at it without spending a ton of money to do it. Thanks Aaron

John Mclendon
Jim Mullins

I would go with either one of those. I'm not sure if Mossback is there yet. Lets hope not, its like the plague.

I hunted 9 archery elk last year and I would definately hunt 9 over 10 for the archery hunt. If you know how to hunt at all, a 350-360 type bull is not a problem on that hunt, especially if we have an average horn growth or better year. If you are wanting to hunt a top end bull 380+ then you may want to consider hiring a guide. You cant go wrong with Mcclendon, Mullins, or Mossback. Also Az Strip Bucks has some private land tied up in 9 and 10 and will surely kill some monsters off that this year as it has had very little hunting pressure. I have not hunted with the other outfits I mentioned, but I have hunted with az strip bucks twice and if you choose them you will not be dissapointed.

Look at their blog. It's full of giant bulls from 9 and 10. Mossback puts in more time than any of the az outfits and their success goes with it, the biggest outfitted bulls in unit 9.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-09-13 AT 08:01PM (MST)[p]Btw, in my experience, I would speak with the following outfitter. All of them. And go with who fits you best. They r all reputable for 9.

Jay Scott
McClendon
Mossback
Mullins
Az strip bucks (for private access)

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Steve Chappell. Everything I have read about his outfit has been positive.

I don't have enough points for 9 or 10 but I'm getting close. What other units does Johnny Casner hunt ? I'm "thinking" about cashing them in this year. Archery elk....

BE CAREFUL AARON, SOME UNITS HAVE CHANGED A BIT......THEY ARE NOT WHAT THEY USED TO BE IN QUALITY. I TOO HAVE HAD TO MAKE A UNIT ADJUSTMENT FOR THE SAKE OF BETTER BULLS.....................................YD.

Jay Scott and Darr Colburn - they guide together.

While I have hunted with them, I have him them up for information as well as follow their blog. Very professional. Book with them and don't worry about anything except making the shot. That's who I'll be using when the time comes.

It is true that McClendon and Mullins historically get some of the best bulls each year. They usually guide the "governors" tag holders. In recent years Mossback and Vaquero have also been taking some smokers. But when you look at their photo galleries look for bows in the pictures.

Sending out multiple spotters and shooting bulls at rifle distances is an endeavor different than bowhunting.

Since bowhunting was mentioned in the original post it is my opinion that you need look no further than Steve Chappell or Colburn and Scott. They consistently get their bowhunters into 360+ bulls.

Good Luck

As you can see from the above posts, Arizona has an abundance of top quality guides and outfitters.
Some of the best, probably the very best advertise here on ?Monster Muleys?.
Go to the Arizona board and look at the Ads on the left side of the page and you will have a short list that can't be beat.
As far as choosing one, that really needs to be up to you, based on you hunting style and expectations.
If you have made the decision to go on an outfitted hunt in one of these units, you should call and talk with them. Talk to at least 5 or 6 of them, then narrow your list down to 2 or3. Call them again, and again if need be. Pretty soon, one of them will start to stand out to you.

Check out Matt Schimberg, he has just gotten a big ranch in unit 9 that hasn't been hunted and might be something you are interested in.

Since you have shot a lot of nice bulls you know how to hunt elk. Units 9 and 10 have a ton of elk. Probably a lot more than anywhere else you have hunted. If a 350 to 360 class bull will make you happy, then you really don't need a guide. If you want something better than a 360 bull, then you probably should hire a guide. Go down 4 or 5 days early scout, spend the entire hunt and you will have numerous chances at 350 class bulls.

Colburn & Scott are great. You won't meet nicer people ant where. They scout and hunt hard. You will get your monies worth and then some.

If applying for unit 10, you might consider reading this about changes on the Boquillas
