Looking for any info any one has. I'm a nonresident with max points
Thought I'd try and get some info on that hunt and unit .Thanks Twobulls14

great elk country, but full of grizz. You will most likely see them every day, sometimes very close. I love to hunt elk up there but it is a full commitment type of hunt. Very steep and nasty. But a good chance for a good bull that time of year with very few tags.

I hunted it last year with Trails West Outfitters as a nonresident. We were into elk as well as grizzlies everyday. The grizzly, supposedly 83 in the Basin made it difficult to put a stock on any elk. I believe at least 2 of the 6 hunters in the two camps during my week had their elk at least partially eaten. Resident hunters I talked to were having a real difficult time with bears and ended up riding in from the trail head in the dark and out in the dark 3 hours each way. The bears were just really brazen I had one stalk me for over a mile as my guide watched from across the basin. Should have could have shot a monster bottom line I shot a good elk.

Sorry I gave you info on 61 type I. I know a little from what I've been told on Type 2. I believe unlike 1 it is mainly private it is not as steep and is mainly the flat area from Jack Creek trailhead to Meetsee. I would line up access which I hear is quite pricey before I applied from what I hear. I think if you get snow its a great hunt . I think it goes into the middle of November it is a great hunt if you get snow, if not it can be tough.

As of last year the G and F doubled the season (it now starts Oct 15th), doubled the tags, and doubled the area (you can hunt all of unit 61 now). I also feel they double f'd it all up. Now those guys hunting 61 type one the last two weeks of October have to deal with the type 2 guys that drew and visa versa.

For access through all the private land call Ryan @ 307-272-7979
he owns a cabin at the end of the road and can provide access and possibly accomodations in the cabin. He is a super good guy.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-13 AT 10:14PM (MST)[p]Hi tetoncomando. PM me if you'd like. I'm just curious who you are? I'm Ryan's brother. I'm assuming you know him pretty well? He is a good guy but I'm not sure after the last year or so of hunting seasons if he'll be handing out any more permission unless you're friends or family. A guy never knows though I guess till you ask. Maybe he'll be caught in the right mood. I'm just saying that so a guy doesn't get his hopes up.

Definitely grizzly central there. I'd suggest taking horses along each day & try to pack it out asap. If you go back the next day after it, you'll likely have a grizzly on it. I know of 3 guys that shot bulls & all three had problems with grizzlies.

solar electric fences should be packed in and used.
