LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-13 AT 08:29PM (MST)[p]Hey all, I have 6 points going into the elk draw. I am coming from Wisconsin so scouting time is limited. I am looking for ideas on a rifle unit. I am looking to do a DIY so none or limited wilderness. I would like to hike in and avoid the crowds, not necessarily looking for a giant just a quality hunt. If hike in is not avalaible I would also consider an ATV Truck hunt. Thinking of unit 100 as a long shot. Thanks for any info.

You will see a lot of bulls in 100...
Fun, wide open country.
The elk are out in the sage. Seen them cross the sand dunes too...
Home tosome of the worlds tallest sage brush at 10 ft in a few places...
I didn't believe it until I was it...

I hate to be the barer of bad news, But I've done the math on
quite a few Wyoming elk units for non-res's and PP....

If your 1 point back of max, 7 going in 2013, the disadvantage
is HUGE on high demand tags.

Unit 100 for example. 9 permits for max points, 146 applicants.
13 years to clear this group out. 391 in the next group...
Possibly 30+ years out to draw unit 100, 1 point back!

Aside of course, winning the lottery, and drawing a random tag.
Those odds were well over the 1 in 100+ range.

Boy. it's starting to look like Colorado. It tok me 21 years to draw my elk tag there. I am at 6 NR PP for elk. But I do have max points for deer.

If you want to do 100..use the special draw. Nearly the same amount of tags (7) with only 1/3 the applicants. The random draw works as well. Someone has to draw!

I drew unit 100 in 2007 in the special draw option. That unit is really fun to go DIY, easy access everywhere but the roads have a lot of clay and get greasy when wet. That has been my only experience in Wyoming for elk. I did shoot a branched antler bull with my bow during the last week of Sept, as calling worked well. No hunting pressure to speak of during the bow hunt option, actually I didn't see another elk hunter the week I was there. I heard the rifle season was crowded due to the cow tags. The sage brush in some areas is very tall. Scouting is not real critical unless you have to shoot a trophy. Good luck in the draw...
