This will be my first time putting in for a elk tag and if I am lucky to draw first time hunting them. I am wondering if it would be better to do a archery hunt or try for muzzleloader or rifle tag. I will be hunting in NM. Odds are better to try and draw for a archery tag but I feel like I might have more success for my first trip if I go muzzleloader or rifle.
Opinions????

It's pretty hard to beat an archery hunt for bulls in the rut. Don't worry about success as much as just getting your feet wet and having fun!

+1 for TOPGUN. It doesn't get any better than hunting elk in the rut with a bow. Success is secondary to excitement of the close encounters you will have. If you do get lucky and get one it will be that much sweeter because it was done with a bow!

I love bow hunting its my favorite way to hunt. I def learned alot this year chasing muleys with my bow. Its a lot different than hunting whitetails.

I actually think it is easier hunting bulls with archery equipment in the rut vs hunting them post rut with rifles. It is easy to locate them in the rut obviously with them bugling... You really need to know elk to hunt them successfully in heavy hunted areas post rut.

Let me guess, you drive a 1 ton with oak trees for smoke stacks, 12" lift kit and 40" tires to pull a single place lawn mower trailer?

No doubt I would go with archery. As was previously mentioned the close encounters while bow hunting are incredible and then if you are lucky enough to get one down it makes it that much more gratifying.

Get lots of shooting in before the season starts.
