My Archery Pahvant Hunt

I've been meaning to throw some pics up of my hunt this past fall..I had the Pahvant Archery Elk tag this past fall. This hunt was incredible. I spent a ton of time on that mountain and absolutely loved every second of it. It was easily the hardest thing I've ever done but the memories easily help you forget the hard times. HJB and I spent the summer getting some pretty sweet video and trail cam pics.

Here are some links to our scouting vids that HJB put together

I passed on a ton of great bulls at the beginning of the hunt waiting out for the big one. My goal was a 350+ and about closed the deal 5 or 6 times on some monster bulls. Thats why I love archery hunting its so mentally and physically tough but so exciting to get that close. The last day of the hunt I was chasing a 360 class bull that had 6 to 7 cows with him, he showed very little interest in my calls and we ended up calling this bull in at 27 yards. Too hard to pass up, I didn't want to leave empty handed, and eat my tag.. Instead my freezer is full and I'm so proud of my first kill with my bow, not the monster I was dreaming about, but so excited none the less

I had a ton of help from MM'ers espcially HJB(matt) and with the draw coming up, if you get lucky enough to draw this amazing area, I'll be the first to share my knowledge and help a fellow hunter out about the Pahvant!

Congrats!!! I have been in your same boots. I drew the archery tag in 06 for manti and then in 08 for achrey manti again at expo. I ate tag soup passing on awesome bulls waiting for the 3 big bulls to make a mistake. I literally passed on 320-340 type bulls. Never happened. So redemption set in for tag #2. I was willing to kill any 6 point bull. A complete 180 from 2 years earlier. Never had to many chances.

That said, BOTH were a hunt of a lifetime. I loved every moment of those hunts. 2 tag soups, but memories for ever!!!

It looks like you had fun with the videos and pics. Good job on all of the hunt!

Congrats on your success and wonderful experience!

Zeke

PS:
Robiland: Were you hunting with your boy on Sat? I don't know who you are but I think you hunted with my brother too. Your elk story sounds familiar.

Archery elk is a tough gig, even in great Utah LE units! When you set your sights that high, you have to know that soup might be what you eat the rest of the year. But your memories of that experience will go way beyond the freezer being empty!

Good on you Sir Woody622

I also drew a Pahvant Tag in 2012 but I drew the muzzleloader tag....I would like to thank both HJB and Woody622 on their advice and help with telling me what they had seen and being just being good fellow hunters...Thanks again guys! I ended up getting a 352 bull on the South End

ZEKE, Yes I was hunting with my boy saturday. Is your brother Kurt Z? If so, yes, you would have been with us hunting. If your BRO is Kurt, He is a STUD!!! I loved his stories/hunts.

Yup, we've made the connection!
He sure had lots of fun.
PM your email to me and Kurt will send some cool pics of your hunt.
Cute boy and huge dog, pretty cool. Wish I would have caught the phone when you called!
Zeke

It's always great to have people who will help. Nice to see there are sharing, great guys still out there! It makes the hunts even sweeter. Sounds like HJB is a stand-up guy.

Nice bull! It sounds like a good long hunt! Can't beat that

Awesome....thanks for sharing. I drew a Manti archery tag last fall so I know the feeling. I had at least a dozen close calls before the stars alined and I was able to take my bull at 25 yards.

Can't wait for another chance to hunt rutting elk with my bow again.

Nice bull Woddy!

PSC let's see your bull

Sweet photo story. Good looking bulls defiantly living up to the reputation that the pahvant is famed for

Congrats! I have been in a similar situation! I ended up eating tag soup, but i gave it my all passed on a few lesser bulls missed 2 big bulls ( i dont like range finders and i just guess my yardage wrong once(340-350 type) the other time i hit a tree stump in front of his vitals( big heard bull). Tough hunt! I would have shot that bull on my last day too! No shame and any animal with a bow is special! Congrats and dont let anyone ever make you feel bad about that bull!

love the shot(black and white photo) of the bull coming thru the tree, Great looking bull even if he wouldn't score great.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-25-13 AT 12:48PM (MST)[p]I hope Woody does not mind me posting a few more pics.
The bull in that black and white pic was on our hit list. We named him Rufio. He was a pretty sweet bull, but not a monster. We figured he was probably in the 330-340 range. Good beams, but not the best tine length. He did have a wide frame though. Regardless of score, he was a pretty bull and we liked him.

Here are some other pics of him, and you can also see video of him in the videos posted:

We also had this cool bull on our list and named him "Jim Beam"

We called this bull the Pope, he was also a shooter:

Man JBH you're gettin me excited. I won the lottery a few weeks ago with an early pahvant rifle tag. I would love to talk with you and woody and get all the advice I possibly can from the 2 of you. I know there's lots of awesome country between Scipio and I-70, It's hard to know just where to go to maximize your time. I'd love to chat, if you wouldn't mind. Thanks (I'm just waiting for my new trail cams to get here so I can get up the mountain) Can't wait.
