We have purchased left over deer tags in unit 34 and was wondering if anyone has hunted this area and has any experience there. We will be packing in away from the roads on horseback.
Also would you recommend me buy an elk tag. It will be the 3rd season nov3-9.
Thanks ,
Lucio

You are going to have a hard time "riding away from the roads". I spent some time in the area and have horses. Most of the lands are inaccessible by horse. Too cliffy, no public access, or have roads. Good luck though. There is a reason 34 is a leftover tag. There are always a few good bucks in any Colorado unit, though.

There are lots of places off the roads that are both accessible to the public and by horse. Start by getting a Glenwood Springs Surface Management Status map from the BLM. From the Dotsero exit take the Deep Creek Road up the Mountain. Find a place to park on BLM ground on the way up and take one of the closed two track roads off the switchbacks and you should be in great mule deer country for the 3rd season. If you can get around up top (you should be able to unless it snows too much) park at the Coffee Pot campground and ride south on either of the 2 forks until you hit a dead end, then keep going. This is sheep grazing country and you can get around on a horse almost anywhere.

If you can find somewhere to park the truck and trailer you can ride the horses up Transfer Trail from Glenwood and find a place to hunt--ledgy country, but doable if you get up far enough.

Don't expect much for trophy quality, but there are some respectable bucks around, and a few elk too. You never know what you'll run into, especially in November.

Ditto what Nick said. This is beautiful country, but expect a lot of hunters. With horses you should do fine. Also this is as good a place as any to bring along an elk tag, just don't hold out for a monster.

My two big toes wish I would have had some horses last year in this unit, they have just bearly grown back. Where we were seeing most of the deer was straight up and down. We concentrated on the "mid" elevations because of all the snow on top. I was in awe at the number of elk camps on top in the coffee pot area. We did not hear any shooting up high either. They were hunting in a foot to two feet of snow.
I would find a good place to pack into off one of the closed roads that atvs cannot access, and find a good place to glass. I got lucky and shot an o.k. buck. However, I saw two wallhangers someone was packing out on my way out of town they were coming out of Grizzly canyon(steep).
I will try and post a picture later.
