Ok , gonna need advice from fellow MM users. Did NOT draw in WY w a special draw-looks like everyone was in for all aval tags, maybe prioce inc.? Thought i'd sneak in-ya? Maybe a decent lope tag for later??
Then, I'm at 19 pref pts pre draw for CO [NR]. I'd like to bow hunt so i can indeed draw sooner than later. 61, i'm ok to go, BUT, they all say "you'
re crazY TO BURN 19--GO OR WAIT FOR THE 2/201 BOW HUNT IF YOU NEED A GOOD BULL. I'm a DIY bowhunter thats Never been in 2 or 201. but do have a week scout trip for 61 that was 3 yrs ago that was worthy. Just ready to burn the pts and go.
1000 miles away and need some worthy advice.
Of course-will send to NM for other hope-but not slam dunk.
Guish,, isin't it a bit frustrating for the DIY w/ a budget??
Riggo--THNX in advance

If you have been in 61 and liked what you saw go for it. However I would be hard pressed to pass up a chance at 2 or 201. From everything I understand and have seen 61 is good but compared to a 2 or 201 it is not on the same level.

Again you already have been in 61 and liked what you saw. Better to just go hunt...

Riggo,

unless you want to wait another 9 years to put in for 2 then you will need to look elsewhere, unfortunately with only 1 NR tag for archery and no hybrid draw guarantee for NR you have limited options in the northwest.
Here are the current stats if they stay the same in the 2013 draw,
3- applicants with 21 points
6 - applicants with 20 points
7 applicants with 19 points
then there is also the points holders who have not declared a unit that may decide to jump in to "burn" points also which will increase the points creep and decrease odds of drawing.
Hope this helps,
Chris

I think these points are accurate, but I'm not sure.

You might also think about Unit 10. It's a bigger unit and it has great bulls (occasional 360-370) and a ton of good bulls (310-340).

I hunted 10 last year with 15 instate prefrence points and I'd do it again in a heartbeat. Unit 2 and 201 would be my first choice in terms of killing a monster.

With 19 points I would take a serious look at unit 10. I have spent time in both units [10and 61] and find it easier to locate and approach the bulls in 10. Overall top end quality is better in unit 10 imo. I dont know much about 2, 201 but obviously are much tougher to draw.61 has lots of elk and a few good bulls for sure but is a more difficult unit to find the bigger bulls and then access the deeper, steeper canyons to hunt and remove the animal if you happen to kill one.

either one you choose its just a shame you have to wait that long 19 points tough decision...61 would be my choice simply because i know the unit, 19 points or 25 what ever it took... i have heard alot of talk about the north west corner both good and bad I just would not want to use that many point on a place that I could not spend a ton of time in.which it sound like you will only get to do a limited amount of scouting if you choose 61 drop me an email ....

LAST EDITED ON Feb-24-13 AT 08:32AM (MST)[p]10 would be my unit of choice for a great archery elk hunt. I went to school in Rangely for a couple years and spent a lot of time in 10. Saw several great bulls in the 330-360 range, fun country to hunt. Much more open than 61, to be able to spot and move in on good bulls. Top end in 10 I would consider to be quite a bit better than 61. With 19 points 10 would be my unit of choice for basically your hunt of a lifetime. I have hunted general or OTC units, that hold bulls as good or better than 61. Just my opinion though. 2,201 would be best if you are willing to hold out a few more years. Take a look at CJ Outfitters website for 10 bulls and Raftopolous Ranches for 2,201 bulls quite a bit better than anything you see in 61. Good luck.

Thanks for the replys folks. I'm just thinking 20 years of sending is long enough. I'm in need a making a key decision soon. Looks like the 10 tag could be out there quite some time as well. The years fly by don't they??
Thanks again

Riggo,
Give me a shout if you want to know anything about 2. I had a rifle hunt there last year, DIY. Not there for the bow season but can point you in the right direction if you are serious about 2. Friend of a friend hunted 201 archery a few years ago and took a really nice bull, but said it was one of the hardest hunts he has ever been on.

Good luck!

I drew 61 archery with 13 PPs, drew 2 years later in another unit with one PP and have 3 PPs now. So I guess if you include the year I drew, I'd have 19 myself if I hadn't drawn.

No regrets!! Great hunt. 350-370, maybe not. But good solid 330-340 bulls mixed in with a ton of average bulls.

I'm glad I did it, hunted again 2 years later, and have enough PPs for my next archery hunt.

Good luck in your decision.

I drew Unit 2 last year with 20 NR PP. There are a bunch of guys that will have 20 this year and a few (at least 3) i know of with 21 NR PP. You will have to wait for 2 or 201.
